Paper or Cloth?

I'm sure this has come up here before. I think I prefere having the cloth dump out bag over paper inner bags. True, I don't think they filter as well as the paper, but the cost of some of those paper bags gets kinda high after a while.

Although more work to clean and deal with, just having a cloth bag might be a little more cost effective to own in the long run. Most of what I'm vacuuming here is just lint type dust with very little sand.

What are some of your thoughts?

If its just lint you're picking up, I'd stick to what you prefer. Soft bags, paper bags - you've got two options, one of them you'll have to pick up whatever you've sucked up, the other you can simply just throwaway. When it comes to my vintage collection where open ended bags are sealed up with a clip, like some Hoover bags where they can be used twice, it really depends on what I have kept or saved in terms of the actual bags.

I must admit I only just threw out a cloth bag I've had for many years in my Hoover Junior models. With the cost of generic and genuine bags coming down all the time with the vintage vacs, it makes sense to just use the paper bag specified - but then I've got to the stage in my life where I'm fed up cleaning out cloth bags.

There comes a time when Enough is Enough, as the song goes : ). However whilst the filtration factor is down, have you ever considered using cheaper disposable dust bags?

My only dirty fan Vacuum Cleaner is my 1977 HOOVER Ranger, and with it I use the paper inner bags. I don't even think I could use it without a paper bag, but if I could, I wouldn't.

The bags don't cost that much, and it is easier. Just let it fill up then dump it. Simples, as our meerkat friend would say.

It all depends on what vac make you're using too when it comes to the cost of bags, last time I bought generic Miele bags, they were more expensive than say generic Kirby bags, and genuine miele bags, lord, they're expensive for what they are and for their size, which is why recently I've been using my demo tool more with the red baron to save using up bags, plus having a working fireplace helps to get rid of the picked up waste...

Shake-out bags are handy though if you've run out of bags for the vac you're using, which is why I have shakeout bags for my Kirbys and my Electrolux C12 (well, the C12 only has a shakeout currently, it'll be getting an ST upgrade soon), and you're just doing a quick vacuuming rather than a big deep clean, but not good if you end up sneezing like nobodies business afterwards, so they do have drawbacks... :&#92

yes cloth dump out bags are better then buying paper bags.it cost to much for those kirby paper bags.cloth dump out bags are a little dirty but just keep them cleaned out.

While I like paper for filtration, I like cloth for pick up power.

Just remember, most of the fine dust that is picked up is generally spat right back out of a cloth bag, coating your house in fine dust which leads to you needing to clean up again...

If its going to be paper I prefer the genuine make.


I love the hepa disposable bags, the Hoover Style S for the new constellation for example, nothing escapes from them, no fine dust on the inside of the vacuum and still has great suction. Same with the Kenmore Hepa.

I got a pile of 50 genuine Electrolux bags with my Diamond J, so yes, paper for me (not that one has a choice on those machines).

I AGREE about those Connie bags. Now, if HOOVER would make a "C" like that, wouldn't that be wild?!

give me a paper bag any day.It's easier to get rid of dirt,dust and whatever else you pick up.Now days with air polution being tressed in the homes; give me a high filter paper bag.The cloth bags leak dust back out into your clean house.And if you have any breathing problems,we need to take care of our lungs. Michael
