It looks like what I have seen inside Kirby cleaners and is possibly a sticky residue formed from vacuuming carpets which were still damp from wet cleaning, particularly if the cleaning product was a leave-in type, rather than extraction.

I can't believe the difference. I also can't believe what people do to a poor vacuum. They must be the most abused appliance in the home.

EWWWWW! Thank goodness you had the tummy to take apart and clean. I like those little vacs, have one under the Kenmore name, dumpster find,gave to sweet friend 5 years back, still using.

Terrific turnaround! It's quite evident that you put a lot of hard work and effort into eliminating whatever horrific foreign substance she had in there. I had to study the one picture for a while to figure what it was. Then I realized it was a Sharpy marker with lint and junk caught around at the EZ Access clog door. I guess its funny and stupid at the same time. I don't want to know how someone vacuumed up a Sharpy marker!!!

Congrats on the find, glad it turned out so well. It's a gorgeous green!

I have a couple family members who not necessarily abuses vacuums but forgets about general maintenance. I had a cousin that lived with my aunt for awhile and my cousin had bought a Kirby Sentria. After just a couple years use the machine looked like it had been through hell and back. The bags were constantly overstuffed and the brush roll was always gummed up with hair and the power nozzle always had that sticky gunky stuff (my aunt had a couple dogs plus her carpets were always moist from so much foot traffic, suffice to say I would do a complete overhaul to the vacuum every week.
Well when my cousin got a new house and she told me she wanted to get rid of the Kirby. Suffice it to say I had it in my car and home in just minutes Now it gets taken care of every day.

the bottom after, i nelgected to photograph the brush roll area after cleaning but before reassembly but i did snap this pic. Than for your thoughts, k9 or carpet cleaner it was nasty, no smell though & didn't make it all the way up the hose so the rest of the internals were fine.
Sadly i have packed my collection back up until next time i visit my mother, so this Panny will have to wait for a full sesion of use.

It would be nice

if one of you experienced vacuum maintenance folks would post a sticky or something on how to maintain a vacuum, especially for those of us with pets and messy family members! Other than changing the bag and belt and taking a retracted ballpoint pen to the brush roll to remove hair, I really don't know what I'm doing, and could profit from your experience!

I have a new Riccar RS 4 Supralite, and don't want it to degenerate into one of the nasty messes I see in those pictures.

I can't believe the difference - I honestly don't think I could take on such a task. I guess you had to take the ENTIRE thing apart and soak it in some strong stuff! EUWWWW. I guess I wouldn't have attempted it myself because I wouldn't be comfortable taking something apart to the extent you would have to to actually clean every single piece of it..........
