I have been given, by Tony, a Panasonic upright from the 80s. It is an amazing machine.

It is one of the smaller, compact models. You have a clutch to slow (not stop) the brush which also deploys a row of brushes behind the suction opening. There is this funny thing called the 'dust alarm' which is basically a thing that makes a horrible noise when the filter is dirty. The switch is in just the right spot on the handle. It carries just over a foot of hose and a crevice tool on-board for edges.

The interesting bit is, it has a big cassette filter and bucket with a mesh screen, like on the split apart canisters from the 70s. The screen has a button that you push from the outside that scrapes the inside properly.

This machine, with it's tiny 600w motor out cleans Miele, Sebo, Dyson, etc and holds up against a Kirby.

I have only one Panasonic and then several of their Tacony-cloned ilk. They are nice vacuums, a little heavy but well balanced, they feel "well made". Smooth rolling operation, not hard to push, and feels nice in the hand. I killed my Panasonic about 7 years ago sucking too much spilled dog food up, it shredded the belt into swiss cheese. I need a new belt in it still since that happened.

Has anyone else every properly tried out a Panasonic upright or canister?
I have an example of almost every Panasonic canister vacuum sold in the US since about 1979 or 1980. They sold a few in the US in the 1970s which I don't have however. I have many of their Jet Flo and later uprights, though far from a comprehensive collection. Panasonic made I think over a hundred different upright models. The variety is amazing. All are high quality. I also have quite a few of their Japanese market models. They are one of my favorite brands.
