Right after Christmas I was lucky enough to win a Dyson DC18 off of eBay for $76. I finally had time to open it today, and cleaned all three area rugs, here are the results. I've been using a Kirby G6 for the past month or so as a daily driver, it has the Hepa filtrete style bag in it, it has a newer belt in it, and the brush roll is at the correct setting.

Oh.....my........god. I thought the Kirby was picking everything up!!!!!

Yes Rick....

The Kirby had electricity flowing through it's veins! And I vacuum every day, or at least every other day!

I'm kind of disappointed in the Kirby, I'm sort of a Dyson believer now, I'm sure Jack is so proud of me! :D

Not to burst your bubble Alex,

But, it would be interesting if you were to turn around and use your Kirby or another brand and see how much it pulls out after the dyson. I think you'll find it's and endless battle. This is so typical of carpeting. What type of carpeting were you cleaning?? My father has an Indian wool area rug, and I can vacuum that until the cows come home and it still sheds, and it has done that since day one, which is nearly 30 years ago.

Wow, you really got a good deal... congrats! Yes, "Dyson" first, then "Kirby" with a new bag and see what's in the bag.

Vacuum tests never fail to amaze me. When I sold Kirbys, someones bagless Dirt Devil vision actually outperformed the Kirby Ultimate G. I almost had a heart attack (that's back when I thought all Dirt Devils were toys... I hadn't yet discovered the joys of the original broom vac and hand vac). We used their vacuum first. There was no dirt in the bin, but the chamber filter was dirty. It picked up dirt. Then we put the dirt meter on the Ultimate G and ran it over the medium pile carpet (also on the correct height setting) and there was enough dirt to turn one pad barely gray. The subsequent pads didn't even get dirty!

In other homes, people who had Kenmore Whispertones and Hoover Elites for example, we pulled filthy pads for hours! Of course it could be dependent on how often the owner vacuumed.

o_O

I'm always surprised by what my Dysons pick up in my house. You must have a dog or cat, right? None of that dirt is carpet fuzz, it's dust and fur. I can't knock the Kirby, though. I'd be surprised if you had vacuumed with the Kirby right before using the Dyson. I'd feel ok about the cleaning I could do if either a Kirby or a Dyson were my only vacuum.

The dirt you see in the picture is about 98% pet fur and actual dirt, my wool rugs barely shed (if you look really close you can see some wool fibers), but all of the bulk you see it pure pet hair and dirt. Don't get me wrong, I like the Kirby, but I'm a little surprised. It would probably do better with the newer "oblique" style brush roll with the stiffer bristles.

I'm really happy with the Dyson, I don't have to worry about bags. I can use it with the Kirby so the expensive bags don't fill up so fast with all of that pet hair. We have 3 indoor dogs, and 3 indoor cats, so bags fill up fast in this house.

When I had my DC07, I used that as my daily driver so I wasn't constantly filling my Kirby bag up as you mentioned. Then, on the weekend I would use my Kirby for that "deep-down clean" as the Dyson's brushroll didn't clean like the Kirby on our hard-to-clean berber. Also, when I had my G6, I had the oblique brushroll and let me tell you, that sucker cleaned! Not only didn't it stop the Kirby from "bouncing" on the berber but it picked up more fine dirt and more cat hair.
Just my info on it!

I love the DC18 - great choice Alex, and I'm glad it's working so well for you! :)

Im really itching to buy a dyson you guys ;~P.
I agree with Vern tho. I think its a cat and mouse game. If you vacuum with the Dyson and then the Kirby then a Sanitare then a Convetible etc I think you will still end up with dirt in the bags. Some more than others of course. But you get the Idea, Im glad you like the Dyson though.
