Would it be safe to use something like a dirt devil classic to clean the outer bag on an older vacuum. I'd think the brushroll would help get dirt out, but it might damage the bag. What do you guys think?

If you are dealing with an older cleaner, it would likely be safer to use a straight-suction upholstery nozzle to clean the outer bag. I personally use my Hoover Dimension canister with its upholstery nozzle to clean the outer bags of my Hoover Guardsman, Convertible and Concept One uprights, and always yields excellent results. Depending on the age and condition of the material, it may or may not be able to withstand the forceful agitation of a revolving brush.

There was a thread reccently for cloth bag cleaning and i mentioned I used my dirt devil 150 to clean the bags. I love it because the brushroll can dig into thick kirby bags and dislodge dirt before washing them!

I just use a Crevice Tool and vacuum the bag's surface throughly. If it's still dirty I will wash the bag in cold, soapy water and let it air dry over night. I have never had any problems doing my cleaning like that.
Let us know how you choose to clean your bag and how it works.
Thanks,
Justin

Hoover said of the U1104 Junior upright, to clean the cloth outer bag: to either brush it, or use a suction cleaner (i.e. a cylinder machine).

Feed the bag to a Tristar, plenty suction from one of them to clean out dirt without the need for a brushroll... :)

I've been trying to do this, but what I did was to use the Kirby hose without any tool attached to it. I did catch a hairball that slowed the motor down, and thus I turned the cleaner off and removed the hose to dislodge it.

What I did for cleaning my Classic III's shake out bag (installed on my 1972 Classic) was use my Classic III with the disposable bag system, and the hose with nothing attached to it. Have any of you cleaned your Kirby shake out bag this way?
