Hi, In the last few weeks I've acquired 3 more vacs. I thought I'd share pics of them.

1st up is a Hitachi cylinder from the mid/late 80s. My supplier bought it to clean out his car at the time and it spent many years in the loft/attic. I didn't know till I saw it they made them in this colour or even that late.

He gave it me with the hose and small nozzle only. He's sure the other attachments are still in the loft and will pass them on to me when he finds them.

Next...

We have a Nilfisk with it's original attachments. Shame the hose has split in half.

It also came with the hard floor tool to a later machine. Hopefully it will polish up well.

Next we have a close up shot. I think I still prefer the GA70 but I do like this machine. It runs smooth.

Is the third vac I acquired a week or so ago. A Goblin Wizard. I cleaned and washed the bag today. The bag was still drying when I took these pictures. I hope at some point to clean and polish up the rest of it.

Hopefully it will turn out nice.

I did not find those Hitachi cleaners at all fun to empty, but I did like the cleaner as they were so very compact and powerful. I remember a woman bringing one into my shop for repair, but the motor was burnt out so I couldn't fix it. She was quite disappointing as she was clearly very fond of the machine. I recall she told me that she'd had a Hoover Constellation before this and really liked the tub shape of the cleaner over the longer, flatter styling of its more cylindrical counterpart.

The Hitachi, she said, had been the nearest thing to the constellation at the time she bought it. I sold her a Henry. She was happy with that, having told me it was as "good as identical" to her Hitachi.

As Vintagerepairer stated

Those cylinder Hitachis were horrid things to empty, that aside though - brilliant and quality machines. My grandmother had one and I used it quite regularly. So very quiet and super strong suction. Still was always amazed at how much a straight suction cleaner was able to pull up...

The model she owned had a fabric disc that sat between the pan and the motor housing. On the fabric disc was a wheel which you whould turn and it would 'beat' the fabric to deposit any dust back into the pan. Ingenious design - but messy... I recall some later Panasonic barrel vacs with the same concept of a filter cartridge with a sliding bar that would grate again the backside of the fins of the cartridge to remove excess dust...

Very rare to see those around these days. Like anything Japanese - super quiet and top quality.

Hey James:

Very nice!! The Goblin Wizard is a model 31 which was made after the war up into the 50's. Did you get the rest of the parts with it? They came with the rug nozzle, floor brush, small nozzle and rectangular brush.

wizard 'fibre' ext tube

.........(according to a pre war 'little book of the goblin' brochure) was also supplied. Never seen one; I imagine they would have been made from a sort of hardboard similar to that used to create the bodies of the post 1935 to circa 1955 cylinder models. The ext tubes probably would have been of a slightly lighter hardboard rendering them rather vulnerable to damage and if so the owner would be more than likely to disgard the part unless found useful, otherwise a replacement would have been purchased, hence the rarity?

Walter.

Hi,

Hi People, Thanks for your comments and info. I'll have to look inside the Hitachi when I get chance. See what it' like inside.

Hi Doug, No I didn't get the rest of the attachments with the Goblin but I'm still happy with it.

The bag has dried nicely. The lady who sent it to me just wanted it to go to a new home and not the tip. I have another Goblin like this but I think it's a model 30 so I assume it's older?

Hi Walter. It would be nice to see that little book of the goblin brochure. It sounds interesting.

This is my model 30. The bag was a different colour and the handle and attachment connection are different. I didn't get the fibre wand with it either. Funny thing is it actually says its a model 31 on it. I suspect the motor was changed and they used a 31 motor with the name plate attached. Love it (Thanks again Al)

Doug
