Is there any interest in an original Hoover Constellation Model 86? I know where there is one, and I might be able to pick it up this weekend as I'm purchasing other stuff.

The vac is just the container. There is no power cord, hose, or attachments. It is yellow in color. It doesn't appear to be dented but it very dusty and needs some TLC. I don't know if it works, either.

I know some people are very fond of Constellations, but since a new version is available in stores I wasn't sure it was worth making an offer on this one last weekend. But you never know.

Thanks for the offer....

...and I think...perhaps I may be wrong...but I think the original Constellation was actually Model 82; and it was two tone blue. When I was a youngster, our neighbor had one. Also, I have a picture of mine in the collections album on this web site. The original Blue Constellation matched the Hoover Model 63. Later the light tan beige color model 84 matched the Hoover Model 64 called the Citation. It was a beige color as well. I think I am correct on this but for sure the Hoover specialists should chime in.

Thanks.

I didn't mean to say that the 86 was the FIRST Constellation, only that this was a vintage version, not the modern retro re-issue.

Oh...

...now I understand what you meant. An original as opposed to the new 2007 version. That makes sense. Arent' words funny! It's so easy to find different meanings in exactly the same words! :)

wait one minute!I have an orignal hoover connie 86 and mine is light blue.that must be the remake model.

Well, if it's free...I'd love it! :-) Well, maybe not FREE, but close to it! LOL! I have always wanted one! I can pay the shipping, too. Email me and we can discuss this! Thanks!

I do remember that...

Hoover made several different blue colors for the Constellation.

There was one blue that sort of coordinated with the blue of the Convertable Model 70. I don't know much about those later model Constellations. Certainly Tom Anderson would know. One thing about Hoovers...variety abounds!

Hoover Constellation

Hi there! The 82 and 84 Constellations shown here are really nice! A side note, this 84 is a LATER and seemingly rarer version of the 84. Yours has the LATER bottom skirt which allowed for better floatation and was continued thereafter. The 'earlier' 84 looked very much like an 82 from the side, but this earlier 84 DID float as well. The earlier one, like the 82, also was hinged and therefore tilted from the base for easier blower access. Again, very nice specimens!! And yes, the 82 was the first Connie!!

Akabent...you are absolutely correct about the differences in the 84 run of the Constellation. I am not sure which is the rarer version...they both seem hard to find!HA!

The 86 originally came in gold to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the company in 1958. It was a top line model. It got shuffled down the lineup a bit as the years went on and by the early 60's they changed it to blue WITHOUT changing the model number. The early 86's used a step on switch and had a wire tool rack. The later ones just used an ordinary metal toggle switch and no place for your tools.

Great Pics!!!

Colour changes without changing models...

Hey Tom

As you know Hoover over here were VERY good @ this. Is the 86 the only US model this happened on???

Seamus

Oh no...plenty more models had this happen during their run...too many to list!!! Many times there were "CRs" (Cost Reductions) that led to changes during the run...case in point was the 84 Connie and the 84b Connie. It just makes it more fun for us collectors to find and sort out all of these differences.

Tom..

Since the Model 82 coordinated with the Upright Model 63, and the Model 84 had the same colors as the Citation, and various collectors' pictures show a pink Connie that looks like it coordinated with the first Convertable, Model 65, then did this pairing continue?

I remember that the Hoover salesman [at least the one my mother dealt with] always encouraged her to have two cleaners, both an upright and a canister. He always said that it was better than bying the attachments for the upright. Mom never did listen to him about this, but I wonder, was that standard sales proceedure? Did they ever make a Connie to coordinate with every color of the Convertables. Specifically, did they make a Connie to coordinate with the Convertable Model 69? Just wondering???

Constellations!

Bruce~

The model 82 matched the model 63 (Blue)
The model 84 (84 and 84B) matched the model 64 (Sandalwood)
The model 85 matched the model 65 Convertible (Heather Rose Pink/ Pearl White)
The early model 86 Constellation was, as Tom said, the 50th anniversary model--if you want to get technical, I suppose it 'matched' the golden model 65 Convertible. The later yellow model 86s didn't 'match' anything.
The model 87 matched the model 66 Convertible (Garland Green)
The model 88 matched the model 67 Convertible (Fawn Pink)
The later blue model 86 Constellations matched the model 68 Convertible (Porcelain Blue)
The model 434 matched a promotional Convertible model 574 (White/Canton Red)
The model 444 matched the model 34 Convertible Special (Bittersweet Orange)
The model 454 matched the model 36 Convertible Special (Nassau Blue [turquoise])
The Model 843 (tilted) matched the model 1060 Convertible (Autumn Gold/Seal Griege)
The model 858 matched the model 1120 Dial A Matic (Orange/Brown)

The last two Constellations--yellow/brown, and the orange/brown had other cleaners that matched them... The Floor A Matic, the Handivac, the Portable, Swingette, all came in those shades of brown and oragne, and the Handivac, Floor A Matic, and Portable all came in those shades of brown and yellow.

Unfortunately there was not a Constellation that matched the model 69. However, the first model of the Portable (all the way to the left in my picture) was in a similar color.

Hope this all makes sense!

Some matching Convertibles...

Find [some of] the matching machines, if you can... :)

I don't have a model 574 Convertible, or a model 34 Convertible Special. The 63, 64, and Dial A Matic are out of sight in the picture.
