the filtratoin on most orecks are bloody terrible!
i just went to clean up some powder dust and it came spewing out of the back form th e vent and under the dirt pipe! they say this thing is good for people with allergys? that's one big fat lie! the backside's COATED in that powder!

i am utterly disgusted by the lie printed right on the front of the bag!

Yes, yes - I know - however, it's the same with most things. Like Dyson's "lifetime" filtration. It eventually has to be replaced! Or the best one yet - no additional bags to buy - from upright brands that claim bagless is cheaper, yet if the motor doesn't have a toothed belt, the rubber drive belts ALSO have to be purchased and fitted.

It's just like most hepa filters

It might be made with a hepa media but that doesn't mean it filters to the hepa level due to improper sealing

Has Oreck ever told the truth? The sales demos I've seen on TV have been just appalling, and some of the user feedback hasn't exactly been positive, the best thing I've seen an oreck do is vacuum up lit petrol on youtube (no longer available from the guy who made the video)... :&#92

Brand bashing? Nah, if you want brand bashing, just look up motoring forums, the Ford vs. GM vs. Chrysler debates are just insane, threads like these here are light hearted ribbing in comparison... :P

Alex,

If I were you I would take a close look at your Oreck. I own the XL21 and find that it filters very well. My guess is that either the fan housing in cracked or the rubber seals in the handle are not in correctly.

I have never vacuumed up a lot of talcum powder, but some and when I cleaned for my friend, she had three cats with two litter boxes in a carpeted room...there was no leakage of dust from the machine.

Not only was there no leakage, it was the best machine at getting the litter out of the carpet.

Oreck's have gotten a bad rap...when in reality they are not that bad. I would prefer using the Oreck over using a bagless machine. Emptying a bagless machine and cleaning it up is far more of a chore than just pulling off the bag and replacing it.

Oreck's Have Gotten A Bad Rap = here's why...

The reason to why Oreck have gotten a bad rap as you say, is because of the design and the elevated price! I had an Oreck XL for 5 years, oh it went well everytime it started up but it was the older model with the push on bag design and bags were forever coming off. I tried the XL21 when it first came to the UK and really liked it - but they have nothing to improve the motor noise and there are still problems with cleaning flat to the floor.

I like the Oreck brush roll. The grooming effect that these models leave on carpets is fantastic but I found whenever the upright was made to clean flat to the floor, the floor head/roller brush just doesn't lay flat on the surface - this is because the central handle design point doesn't go down far enough or is stopped by the last of the rubberised bumper and flush fitting sole plate.

Another issue is that plastic sole plate - it's easy to pierce if you run it over any exposed carpet frame screw heads and the wheels at the back that are also similarly flush fitting means you can't put it on its hind wheels and wheel it back to the cupboard - it always has to be lifted or carried - one of its benefits for being lightweight I suppose.

Another factor is that the Oreck XL in the UK is highly elevated and unjustified - especially for what you are paying. A lot of owners report that the dust bags don't fully fill up to the 13 litres as suggested, thus the dust bags don't always work out value for money. In terms of filtration, all they have the dust bag itself and that's all very well if they did the job. It's fine on cat hair, but dog hair which is the worst for bad smells finds its way back into the room, if the Celoc bags dont stay on the older bag-push-on-pull-off tab.

Another issue is the plastic fan - it shouldn't be fitted to such a high price vacuum cleaner if its going to continually shatter or break. I ended up swapping our XL for the red commercial upright. It had a more modern slip in bag holder, which ended the bag fall off situation, and the red ones have metal fans. Noise level still high, still failing to remain flat to the floor and still requires to have the side brushes bought every once in a while to replace the ones that flatten out - why Oreck can't have edge cleaning is beyond me -

I'd happily buy Oreck again if the machines were quieter, had a lightweight stretch hose on the back of it and associated tools (if Sebo can make a 500g flexible hose, Oreck could do similar.) Sadly for me though, my money goes to Sebo which is far better thought out, albeit a lot heavier but far more efficient and quicker.

Another factor is that the Oreck XL in the UK is highly elevated and unjustified - especially for what you are paying for = just an upright vac and then having to go and get a separate canister for above the floor cleaning when you could do it from an all-in-one design at time. A lot of UK owners report that the dust bags don't fully fill up to the 13 litres as suggested, thus the dust bags don't always work out value for money.

It's fine on cat hair, but dog hair which is the worst for bad smells finds its way back into the room, if the Celoc bags dont stay on the older bag-push-on-pull-off tab. More modern versions of Oreck with the bag slip in holder still leak emissions on brand new machines.

I had somebody give my a dyson and they told me it had no suction.........I removed the filter and folowed the instruction on it and washed it out and put it back in all dryed out and works great agin.......the vacs owner said that didn't know about that filter. I have washed many filters on quite a few bagless vacs.....

I still have my older Oreck and love it, but I have read about this problem and agree that it is a big concern for people like me with allergies and asthma. Let's face it, manufactures feel a need to create hype, but in practice the machines rarely live up to the hype. Bagless is never maintenance free, as most of you know, and HEPA filtration bags does not work if the sealing mechanisms or mechanics of the unit doesn't work properly.

I would still give the Oreck the good once over, but in the end, you may not find that the machine can deliver what it promised or what you need.

Every Oreck I've ever seen has had dust coming out the pipe that connects the bottom to the bag.... not just mine that are older and used, but even the one Terry from Ruskin won at the last convention.... I went to his house last year and he showed it to me and I played with it and was shocked to see that a brand new Oreck still had that same problem... I know Terry didn't abuse his machines, so there is a design flaw somewhere. I never use mine because I just don't like putting in ear plugs every time I use them, but truth be told, other vacuums leak as well....

@ sanitaire

my sister who is a chartered accountant and had been living in the UK called me a month ago. She now resides in New Zealand and took her 8 year old dyson dc08 allergy with her. She was calling to ask if I could send her a new dc25 as the prices in New Zealand are insane so I asked what was up with her dc08. She said it wasn't sucking so well any more. I asked how she cleaned the filter and her response ,,, WHAT filter. 8 years old and it had been used allot while they renovated there homes in the UK. She washed the filter and hey presto suction back.

We see it in our shop every day WHAT FILTER I always love showing them all the stickers on the machine with the wash filter every 3 or 6 months pointing to the filter location. :)

Today`s newest Orecks

are much quieter .

Filter very well .

Do not leak dust anymore .

Seem`s like every one has old Orecks nothing newer than an XL21 .

New Oreck`s are much better than the old noisey dust leaking one`s .

The noise came from the metal fans which they DO NOT use in any Orecks made today .

The New Kevlar fan`s do not shatter or break and make the Oreck motor spin faster.

I suggest buying a newer 2008 -2012 model to see how they have improved.

But stay away from the magnesium it is Junk and made in China .
