My boss got this in as a trade in and said I could have it. It works terribly lol. And it sounds like the bearings are TERRIBLE. Just thought I would show everyone it though.

every collection needs a few *other kind* of vacs. and you can work on it for fun !

Nice vac. I have a new cloth bag for one of those in my collection. If it was orange I'd say send it my way, and I'd add it to my planned orange Oreck collection. Early Orecks and true commercial models interest me.

I think with an older Oreck like that you could probably find a way to replace the bearings if you really wanted to. I have some newer ones and the bearings can be replaced if you try hard enough. Even the brush roll bearings are replaceable on some models. While some Orecks are lousy performers, they were built well.

You did the right thing by bringing it home, Chase. These XL-4000's are getting harder to find since Oreck discontinued the bags about 3 or 4 years ago. They were actually made for Oreck in Germany by a company called McDonald Electric. I have an orange XL-4300 with that same bearing problem. I have a vacuum cleaner repair manual from 1981 showing how to repair the XL-4000 series, and unfortunately even back then the only solution for the bearing problem was to replace the motor. You can use a little 3-in-1 oil and that will quiet them down a bit if you want to putter around with the machine, but since bags are NLA, I think it's just something nice to add to a vintage vac collection.
