I am deciding weather I want a Kenmore Progressive (the electronic one) or a Oreck upright. I want to know the model you have and how you like it. Can you also tell me if you can get them without the wimpy canister and the pice-of-trash speed iorn. If any of you could show me pics of vintage ones that would be nice too!

It depends if you want the vacuum for your collection, or to actually clean with--the Oreck is more of a unique item, the Kenmore progressive (especially the bagged ones) clean MUCH better, and represent a better value. I have a 1997 XL with the switch on the base, and the normal (non helping-hand) handle. Do I like it? It's neat to look at, and I'll keep it since I bought it awhile ago. Would I buy it all over again? Absolutely not. Whatever you do, don't pay a penny more for the Buster-B and iron. The iron wasn't offered at the time I got mine, but I hated the canister so much I just put it in the garbage. It was a terrible machine all around--SHORT hose, bad attachments, small bags, and poor filtration. I admire Mr. Oreck for his marketing genius and the fact that many of his products are made in the United States, but his vacuums leave a lot to be desired, IMO.

Oreck

The Oreck does do a decent job on bare floors because of the squeegee-type blade behind the brushroll, but the Kenmore will do well also with the brushroll shut off. If you have Berber you need to be careful about how stiff the bristles are--if you're looking at paying Oreck money you might do well getting a Miele upright (soft bristles, shut-off for bare floors) that won't damage your carpeting. The Oreck may or may not be alright, but again, I would rather have something else for that price.

I say get a Riccar! @ only 218.95 it is worth every penny!! I LOVE it!! Not only does it have stiff brushes BUT it out cleans Oreck by a wopping 56%!!!!!!!

I say your best bet is the Oreck XL-21. It's 33% stronger then the rest of the Oreck lineup, has the best filtration, is quieter, and literally goes by itself. You can purchase it without the compact canister (although this canister is pretty impressive) at an Oreck dealer or on eBay. The retail is $699, but that entitles you to a 21 year warranty, and 21 free yearly tune-ups. How long is the warranty on the Riccar?

when you spend 700 dollars on a vacuum, its like paying for 21 years of service in advance! lets be generous and say the true value of the xl21 is 200 dollars. that means you have 500 dollars left. enought to pay for 21 years worth of service. the oreck scheme is such a ripoff.

The Oreck XL21 uses the same motor/fan/brushroll as the regular Oreck XL's.
You are in reality paying for 21 years of yearly tuneups.

The XL21 does NOT use the same brushroll,motor,and fan.I have extensively used this machine,it is wonderful.The fan is MUCH
larger than the other Orecks,the brush is stiffer,it seems self-propelled,is alot quieter,and cleans carpeting up to 76%
better.People LOVE them.And the Buster B that goes with it has far greater suction,airflow and filtration than the other BBs.

The ProLite used a 6 amp motor with twin fans and a stiff brushroll.

Thank you, Dualsanitronic, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one here who likes the XL-21. For those who think it's like the rest of the Oreck lineup, I invite you to try the machine. I have the Kenmore equivalent to the Bissell ProLite, the Kenmore E4 which too has been discontinued. I liked it better than the ProLite, because it is a hybrid bagless. It has a twister cup on the back to trap the larger debris.
