I was at an upscale shopping area this morning and noticed that the Oreck store has closed. This is the 2nd local store to close recently. Anything going on?

A number of Oreck stores around the cities here have closed in the last year or two. I think there were just too many in proportion to the amount of business they generated.

Oreck is marketed through so many channels today, my guess is it's hard to stay in business. Repairs keep the lights on, but sales are their real bread and butter. Now, they're even sold in stores at big box retailers. An unfortunate sign of the times....

While in
Nashville earlier this week, I peeked in the window of an Oreck shop across from the Cool Springs Mall. Seemed like a good (busy) location as there is a Bed Bath & Beyond, Office Depot, TJ Maxx and some eateries in the same shopping center. Anyway; In addition to Oreck products, they had a small display of Miele.
Seemed odd as there were no window signs or banners mentioning Miele in the store. Maybe they were in the process of getting their display in order.

Store in West Jordan, Utah is gone
The Oreck franchise in Utah had a store in an upscale development in the next town south of me. The huge shopping complex is called Jordan Landing. I worked for the Oreck stores at the time the Jordan Landing store opened. Oreck required it franchise owners to decorate new or remodeled store to a certain standard. They even required that their own decorators be used. That store cost my bosses a mint. It never made a profit while I worked for them. Now, it's closed. I have not checked the other Utah area stores, but the one at Jordan Landing was supposed to be their Flag Ship Store, I'm sorry to say that it was never more than a White Elephant. I'm sorry to see it gone.

Oreck has decided to add another line of vacuums, and the powers that be chose Miele. The local ownership of our seven stores here has met with the Miele rep once, and she's due to come back in a couple of weeks to see if they're going to start selling them here. We only have one Miele store here in the St. Louis area, and Bed Bath and Beyond have them too. Oreck is already in Target, Costco, and soon Sears, so if they want to keep their stores alive, I think it's a smart move to add another line. I spoke with Andy Weter, our club Miele guru, and he is pumped about the additional exposure. Andy told me what models are being offered to Oreck, but I don't remember the model names, but there will be a nice price range, starting with a straight suction canister for $299.00. Some of the other Oreck stores in other cities have started selling Miele already, but haven't heard how it's going.

The addition of Miele is equivalent to the final gasps before the death of the Oreck store. They are desperate to do anything to save their life. In reality, its just another vegetable on life support.
Unfortunately, MOST (not all) Oreck store staff has no clue about anything other than Oreck. They have no clue how to repair anything but Oreck. They aren't true vacuum people who have studied and appreciated vacuums for years and years. I hate to see Miele tarnish their name by sticking the product in a dying medium. The ONLY way to make money in vacuum cleaners is to work on ALL makes and models, and to sell ALL makes and models.

So, I've reviewed what was marked as offensive, and while I personally was not offended by what was said, I can see how others may have been. There are plenty of folks who like Orecks, and some here even work for them or have close ties to those who do.
What was said was enough for 7 people to click the button to mark the thread as offensive, so it stands.
Sometime this next week, I'm going to be changing it to 3 or 4 hits of the button. If 3 or 4 people feel something isn't right, that's enough, in my opinion, to justify removal until I can examine what was said and removed.
If what was said in today's thread which was removed had been phrased from the beginning with a simple "in my opinion" -- folks might not have taken offense to it.

I think the low priced vacuums sold thru Wal-Mart,Target,BBB,Sears,Kohls,and so on are killing the Oreck places.and the hard economic times.Is there any way we can see what the deleted poster said?just wanted to see what he had to say-good or bad.I see this on this site and the Appliance one that your curiousity is picked."What did he say"?

The Oreck store in Fort Wayne has closed as well. I knew the previous licensee who ran the store profitably, but he was always at odds with Oreck HQ.
1) Oreck demands payment upfront BEFORE anything is shipped
2) The shipping was horribly, inexcusably slow
3) The Oreck powers that be did not believe in the accounting concept of 'cost of carrying goods' once you bought inventory it was always an asset according to them.
4) Stores were to carry enough of everything (even items that did not sell) so at to never run out. Tom had hundreds of dollars of bags and belts on order and still filled orders by buying from ESSCO (who always had priority over the stores)
The most recent Fort Wayne licensee is a man who had multiple stores in OH, and some multi-line stores there as well. Oreck saw their sales of upper end models dropping off. The big box offerings were to garner that end of the market. People who were shopping multi-line stores were not being encouraged to buy Orecks, and so many never set foot in an Oreck only store. The only viable option was to move into multi line stores and/or convert Oreck only into multi-line stores.
The vac shop who picked up the Oreck line became the reps #1 store in less then 30 days, and sales continue to soar, stocking only 4 models of uprights, two air cleaners, and one steamer. The Oreck stand alone stores were merely a phase in their long range marketing plans, and watch, the Oreck/Miele stores will vanish or become full fledged multi-line stores as well.

Orecks @ Target in the Houston TX area....
Are already marked down for liquidation. It backfired on Target because they sold vacuums in the stores, but not the bags.

QVC actually sells Orecks and have for some time. I don't own an Oreck, but have visited their website from time to time. Has Oreck reduced their prices on some of the models on their website???? QVC always adds something to their sale price or has a Today's Special Value price.

I was at my local vac store today who is an authorized Miele dealer and does quite a good business. Fred S. and Tania V. have both been to the store with me.
The owner told me today that Oreck sold out earlier this year but he could not remember who bought the company. He went on to say that Miele is purchasing Oreck to have the distribution centers that are already established all over the US. It seems both vacuums will be sold.
From what he said, the official transaction has not taken place but it would appear it is only a short time away. He not too happy about this as it will hurt independent Miele dealers such as himself.
He also said you can buy Orecks in some of the big box stores. I had no idea about this either. I called Fred S. to see what he knew and he was going to do some checking as he has very good connections in the business.
I guess mergers can happen in any business. Survival of the fittest--sort of.
