Oreck Filing for Chapter 11

VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

the minute that mr oreck sold the company ,it started going down hill, they changed mr orecks plan of selling bagged vacuums and made a bagless. more and more the quality of orecks was going down hill, and more oreck products were coming from china, the only really good orecks were the xl21 the indigo, insight, legend, and current gold.they even had to put a new pilot out cause of outer bag problems, its a shame

As A Recent Oreck Owner

I can say that I've been very happy with the Graphite that I have, and that my grandmother, who has had an old XL for at least twenty years has been just as happy with hers. I really hope that they can pull through this and make the needed changes for the better, but deep down my biggest fear is someone like TTI will swallow them, then gut them and send everything overseas.

oh no I hope they keep making the normal oreck's. I can do without the bagless, pilot, edge, and halo crap but the good old 21 style is great.
Damn we better start stocking up on bags just in case

Even if Oreck goes under, we can still buy an AMERICAN-MADE Simplicity/Riccar 8 pound light weight upright. They clean far better than Oreck's (by test - 40% better) and are LOTS cheaper. We have one of each Oreck model made from the past 15 years in the testing labs at Tacony, and not one (not even the XL21) cleans as well as the entry level model Simplicity Freedom. I think the Oreck is fun to use every once in a while but I'm not sure I could deal with it as my only vacuum. I could definitely deal with a Freedom as my only upright.

In Today's Paper

In today's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette newspaper, there was a business section report saying that the company had laid off an unspecified amount of people in January and did another round of layoffs in March.

It is rumored....

that the company filed bankruptcy to reorganize and that the Oreck family wants it back. Geez, now I work for two bankrupt companies, other being American Airlines, but that's resulted in a merger.

HOORAY!!!

As far as I am concerned, it's my opinion Oreck DESERVES to go out of business! All they have ever done is focus on lightweight uprights that do a piss-poor job of cleaning, & outsource anything else they make (or buy another company for their products, ie. the Regina Carpet Steemer & the Halo vacuum).

And what the heck were they thinking keeping production in America?!?! VERY STUPID MOVE not to outsource more of their products to other parts of the world! There are plenty of companies that have proven that just because something is outsourced to China, or another Asian country, it doesn't mean it's a poor quality product. A perfect example of this is when Miele transferred production of their S500 series canisters to China. They should have at least gone to Europe, & reduced their labor costs.

With this bankruptcy, I just found the perfect excuse to give away my Oreck XL :-)

Wow

what an evil and nasty thing to wish on a business that is not very nice .

Oreck vacuums have been a God send to many people with arthritis, carpel tunnel and many other problems . Oreck Vacuums gave people back a chore they thought they lost forever due to their illness . Many hotel and motels use Oreck's and have saved employees from getting hand or other medical problems . They do a decent cleaning job although not deep cleaners but they serve a purpose .

I think it is wonderful that they stuck with making Oreck's here in the US many people support their family's thanks to Oreck .Some machines have been outsourced and that's a shame. I hope the Oreck Family takes their company back and brings all machine production here in the US just like Tacony has done .

I also thank God TTI has kept the Hoover name around as well as the Royal/ Dirt devil name .

I have learned in life it is better to be kind and speak well of others and businesses and never wish negative things on anyone or thing .

It IS certainly better to be kind and

speak well of others. Dan, we've found something on which we BOTH agree! Who knew??
Sadly, a lot of people say horrible things to and about others, in lots of ways. It's a terrible thing, indeed.
I NEVER like Orecks, but, I appreciate others who do. I had to use one at my last job. I've had to use one which belongs to a family friend. She was ill, and I was ASKED to "please help her". I did. I thought Dave Oreck selling the name was a mistake. He did it for money. He also stayed on to use publicity. True, arthritics do find them a joy to use. They are expensive, perhaps too expensive.
I have an upright AND a car vac, which I'll post pics. They'll be available for sale. They are among the "cellar dwellers". It's always sad to see an American company suffer. Look at the disaster that happened on Maple Street in North Canton. It was and still is .... devastating.

I am not the horrible person some have made me out to be on this site , I am mostly speaking about the nasty emails I have received from some members . That aside I really don't care what people think about me because I know and my friends do also that I am a caring and giving person .

I love Oreck and many brands of vacuums I managed an Oreck store years ago and had the chance to purchase it but chose to open my own store which sold many high end brands including Hoover .

When my grandmother was diagnosed with severe arthritis the late 80s - early 90s her doctor asked what kind of vacuum cleaner she had, and she told him (it was a Kirby Dual Sanatronic 50), and he proceeded to tell her that she needed to get an Oreck. Everyone knew of Oreck where she lived because the factory was in the town (Long Beach, MS) before moving to Tennessee after Hurricane Katrina. The machine has served her exceptionally well over the years, only bag and belt changes. Having the Oreck gave her the freedom to lead a much more regular life when it came to doing housework. There are a great number of products that I don't like, across all categories, and brands of products that I would never buy personally, however there are people involved. I would never ever ever jump for joy upon hearing that an American company, employing hundreds of people, is filing for Chapter 11 and is potentially subject to being sold off and shipped overseas. For a good example, I would never own a Chrysler product, but you know what, when they filed for bankruptcy back in 2009, my first thoughts were for the people in the factories whose liveyhoods depended upon the job they had in the factory. The great thing about America, and the free market economy specifically is that there is a great number of goods to choose from, in all sorts of categories, and the individual consumer gets to pick what works best for them. I have the Oreck because I live in a small apartment and the Oreck is compact and provides very good cleaning for the medium carpet that I have. But it always goes back to people, and all people, regardless of if you agree with them, the company they run or the products that company makes, deserve your respect (unless they've done something to damage that).
