Opinions on Windtunnels?

The original Green Wind Tunnel (from n. Canton) was good. they lost their flare soon after. The CWP brushroll ruined them

The latest iteration (the bagged Self Propelled Anniversary edition) may not be as good as the original 2001 bagged version, but it still gets top scores in Consumer Reports tests. That's close to 15 years of offering "excellent" carpet cleaning performance when compared with other bagged uprights on the market. It's a little loud and heavy, but if you have acres of wall-to-wall carpeting in a single level ranch-style home, this upright is unbeatable!

My opinions
The Supreme models were my favorite, definitely one of the best cheapest bagged upright vacuums ever made.
Not a huge fan of the Self Propelled models but I still really like them, I'd definitely take those any day over a Eureka Smartvac.
I never liked the bagless models but I don't hate them. I'd take those any day over a Hoover Tempo bagless or a Widepath bagless.
Never used the canister models before.
It's been a long time since I last used a V2 model and I can't remember the performance on those. I hear the bagged conversion models are way better.
Never used a Windtunnel 2 before but I heard negative reviews about those.
The last windtunnel I used was a T-Series, I think they are worse than the regular bagless windtunnels.

In general, the patented WindTunnel brush roll chamber design works: segregating separate suction channels around the brush roll (especially one in front of the brushroll) actually helps suck up dirt kicked up by the brushroll. Any Hoover upright with real WindTunnel channels - real separate air paths in the brush roll chamber - will indeed minimize scattering of dirt and increase performance to clean carpets well. Whether it's a fancy Self Propelled WT Ultra, or a lightweight Bagged Platinum "Oreck Clone", or the budget Widepath Tempo - any of these Hoovers cleans deep carpet with excellence.

I have the bagged version of this that I bought 5 years ago when I built my new house. It has a lot of carpet and I needed the self propelled feature.
Let me tell you it is LOUD. The other problem I have with it is that the carpet height selector lever does not stay on the middle setting. It will vibrate down to the lowest carpet setting every time.
And I have to say the self drive is primitive compared to Kirby.
I found an excellent condition Kirby Diamond Edition 2 years ago and have barely touched the Hoover since. I do pull it out occasionally when I need a hose for something or I need to vacuum throw rugs.
Other than the carpet height selector problem, it is a durable and good vacuum.

They are LOUD! as others have said. I've only had experience with the SP versions. The main flat belt can be hard to change. People say Kirby vacuums are heavy! To me the Windtunnel is a little heavier. They do clean well though.

Though they do clean very well. I have a Blue Anniversary edition, bagged model, and it does a very good job of cleaning, however, it sounds like a steam turbine at full power.
Weight, I agree it weighs as much if not more than a Kirby G-7. Remembering, of course, that the Hoover is carrying it's tools on board.

About any store vacuum made in the last 20 or so years, Cheap flimsy plastic that breaks easily,noisy rattly performance, powerful yes, good performance, not really, they blow dust ,and don't last, A 50 year old Convertible , while not as powerful, moves more air and will outlast the WindTunnel many times, but then, I have no use for much of anything made after the 70s.

UUUUUUUUGGGGGGHHH!!!!! The bagless twin chamber Windtunnels were absolute crap! I had a Hoover Savvy like eight years ago. I ended up tossing it.

Hans I totally agree with you. They are about as good as any plasti vac that comes onto a Walmart shelf. However once they get old and because they were built with planned obsolescence incorporated, they will gradually fall apart. My neighbors had me fix theirs all the time. They had one that was only about 5 years old, but I had to replace the fan, fix the cord hoods, tried to fix the handle release, but couldn't, and it clogged all the time in the filters. My daily drivers are a Brandywine Eureka and a Kirby 514 and they'll never die

A Windtunnel Self-Propelled Ultra that I bought 12 years ago, and it's still going strong. It's my daily driver, and can't say enough good things about it. My only quirk is that belts can be a bit tricky to install. Otherwise, carpet cleaning is great. The sound (loudness) never really bothered me, and I actually liked the way it sounds.
However I hate the way the newer Hoovers (of today) sound. The quality nowadays has gone down tremendously as well, and I'd never buy another one with today's build quality.
I also had a Windtunnel bagless Supreme that I returned 2 days after I bought it, and never went back to another bagless machine ever, once I saw how discgusting, unhygienic and a mess they were to maintain. Not for me, thanks !
I then bought a Windtunnel Supreme (when they started making them cheaper) and it only lasted about 8 years till the motor gave up. I had to get the power switch replaced after 2 years. Then later on the wheel assembly started falling off, then bearing issues.. and at that point I got rid of it since I got tired fixing it. However my self-propelled is still with me.
