got rid of my land line

Got rid of my land line back in 2008, I figured having a land line and a cell phone was redundant. I have not missed it. My smart phone has a wifi calling feature that will use the wifi connection when connected to a router and I also have unlimited calls to the United States using skype for $2.99, I mostly use that for outbound calls when I am at home.
The whole at&t monopoly story is interesting, at&t had a monopoly and the government broke them up, when I was growing up, the phone company here was Southwestern Bell. Then a while back, the phone companies started merging again, and now at&t is probably just as big as it was before the break up. They don't have a monopoly anymore though since you can get phone service through most cable companies, and cell phone service is much more popular. Even when you get land line service now through companies like at&t or verizon, I don't think it's using phone service like it used to work. It uses VOIP instead, at least at&t u-verse does.

Do you remember the phrase "hold the wire"?
I still remember the family doctor's secretary saying that before she put us on hold.

Hold the wire!

Grabs phone cord and hangs on for dear life...

AT&T was a resulting company after Bell was broken up, all the various parts of the old monopoly were broken off into separate companies. My personal favorite will always be Long Lines, with the microwave link towers and the L-CXR coaxial system, and all the nuclear hardened huts with the repeaters in them. Such a fascinating thing from the Cold War era.

But it’s definitely best we de-regulated the phone industry, just like with the airline industry, once deregulation happened the prices dropped and customers came out on top. Regulate competition out of a market and we will get screwed!!
