One disgusting Royal

Well I finally got my Royal 4000 apart. I can’t believe the filth I found. I am currently soaking it in orange solvent . I did wipe clean the tag with model serial etc clean accidentally but I know what it is and no intention of ever selling it. It is a small price to pay to get that filth out.

I think I found the skeletal remains of a mouse in it. . Not really but it is bad. I plan on pulling fan off shortly to have a look at the motor.

Well it’s as good as it’s going to get. I need a new nozzle gasket but I believe they can still be found.

I can’t seem to get the fan shaft off. Clockwise is off right? It takes a lot to turn it but not coming off.

The motor housing encases everything and that was outside the housing. I recently got a 3c with a hole in motor housing. The carbon brushes we're down to almost the springs. The date stamp on the motor was 1960. I'm guessing it was opened before.
I'm going to show it's interior of motor housing. The coil had ground wires clamped on carbon brush housing. I had to undo two screws holding coil in. Fish through black shiz find clamps and disconnect all wires. I've seen it all as you will see that nobody maintains vacuums. I wouldn't be surprised someone chopped up a body and sucked up body parts into shakeout bag including emtor full and into fan coming out opening. It's like people drop into sinkhole tie to back of pick up pull out air dry and sale it. Anyways here is my latest cluster of what the.
The second picture is wiring field coil Everything. The motor removed provided only opening. It's all pretty now but good grief.

Do I repeat don't touch those screws. They mount nozzle. Those if stripped you ruin vacuum. The seal is tight and those screws are machine tightened.

If I was more serious in restoring vacuums...

...or anything else, I'd splurge on a good used pre-DOE dishwasher to wash and sanitize parts. Something like a BOL Hotpoint/GE or Whirlpool/Kenmore. A Hobart-made KitchenAid would be excellent too, but I'd hate to relegate such a good classic machine to washing dirty/grimy parts. I'm not sure what detergent I'd use though, since DW detergents would surely discolor aluminum.

For the few restos I've done, I've used a Sterilite tub and some Simple Green to wash all parts, then I sanitize in another Sterilite tub with a Lysol liquid sanitizer. Sometimes I'll wash twice before sanitizing, and I did get my pressure washer out once for a Kirby fancase with caked on dirt that wouldn't dissolve after soaking in Simple Green and hot water for an hour.

You dish washer isn't copesetic with most vacuum parts. I use barkeeper's friend and soak for a minute scrub everything with green scrub pad. I have an electric power washer. I've used once. It works amazing. I just don't like freezing water getting soakdd when it is freezing outside. I will use more
Power washing then straight to buffer makes it beautiful the quickest.

Oh I know, just joking. However, I am going to soak the parts again in a laundry tub of hot water and Dawn dish shop.

Any tips on how to get the fan shaft off? Seems to not want to turn much past 1/4 inch or so.

If you look at pics the fan spindle is off. Use vice grips near base of fan as that section isn't most use part of fan. If you notice third picture is armature fan blades. You can do by hand hold in place and spindle of fan comes off counter clock wise. Once that's off fan just slides off.
So recap. Vice grips good vice grips. You clamp near base of fan lower shaft. Once vice grips are on. Use one hand to hold armature fan in place. Torque vice grips counter clock wise. I'd say 3/4 inch thread. It will spin off. Then with spindle off keep hand on armature fan pull up on fan twisting while pulling up and it slides up off freely. There may be a spacer on backside of the fan if no spacer then a washer. I took off mine a few weeks ago.

If you're going to use vise grips - not that you shouldn't - just remember that they chew up the shaft, and if you want to pull the shaft through the bearing (idk if it has ball or sleeve bearings, but doesn't matter) you'll have to file or grind the damaged bit of the shaft first. Basically smooth it out so that the shaft doesn't chew up the bearing on removal. In fact, you may have to do it anyway, to get the fan blade back on, but not sure about that.

Use a towel over vice grips to save scarring. If you don't be prepared with a 400 or higher grit sandpaper paper and spend 30 seconds to 2 mins filing down.
As for sleeve bearing the bearing are in hounding right above armature fan. So no bearing to deal with on this one.
My vacuum is in great/ mint condition. The only issue is the headlight bumper and cord has. Nic in it. I may look to sell this but not sure. If anyone knows where to find royal trim let me know please.

Just for my clarification, what I call the shaft (part belt loops over) comes off counterclockwise?

A lot of other videos of "how to remove fan on metal Royal" they spin clockwise to remove.

Is the 4000 model different for same reason.

It must be clock wise remember it's been a few weeks. After a quarter turn if you feel it tighten it's the wrong direction. My imopellor wasn't next to it. Les

As a general rule, just think about which way the motor spins when running. The way it spins, it *tightens* itself into the fan.
