As constant readers of all three Forums may have detected, Davy is hitting the Roadtrip Express again. This time over to Syracuse NY for the weekend Christmas Dinner Banquette at Duo-Art Organ Buddy Rich's house. I'll be totally tied up there Saturday and recovering Sunday and hope to dash on Friday over to Oneida NY.

On Monday I'm driving down to Greene NY, just NE of Binghamton on the NY/Pennsylvania border, to have a Noon & afternoon and who knows how long MicroMeet with Mike Gravelin. Mike asked about - and I have too many - and so I am taking him an Electrolux 89 in great working order that he will have the pleasure of giving the Full Spa Cleanup Treatment. Tonight I latex re-lined and renewed an electric hose for it. I've posted a few times about how I do this and it really is simple if you take care and move fast.

The 89 pulls 65-70 as is. The old hose pulled only 29". It won't be tested again until Mike gets it, I am that confident of my method. Microswitch PN handle having been removed and latex skin peeled out of the coupler tubes, only the hose weave is impregnated with liquid latex and will bond with the weave plugging any leaks and layers and will not peel away over time. Latex that leaks to the outside is allowed to dry then peels off completely from the vinyl weave, another job for Mike. :-).

Here we are in the basement having an hour's worth of warm vacuum air blown through it to cure the latex. Then it will be dusted with talcum powder down the length which coats the sticky surface before actual dirt and debris are sucked up, preventing dust clog balls. The nozzle end is resting on a strip of plastic to catch any after-splurts but there were none.

Apologies, John Long - I have not contacted you - but if you are free on Monday to join us, or free for me to visit on Tuesday anytime, please contact me. There is a definite possibility I will be without internet access in Syracuse (I'll find an internet cafe or unsecured wireless signal somewhere) but ultimately will get a signal at Mike's.

Dave. racing the clock to leave Stratford Thursday at Noon.

Mike, It is Monday morning, I have your phone number and address plugged in to the Garmin. It is Monday at 8:30 AM and I am having 'breakfast' at the Interstate 90 Service area in North Syracuse. Gonna dawdle about a bit here, get caught up on emails, etc and will leave here at 9:30 and be in Greene at 11AM, or a few minutes sooner.

Dave

Gee wiz lol...I wish I could have joined you guys,it only about a 4-5hr ride, anyway Im still waiting in antcipation for the return story like your last one Dave ;)

well Dave made it here safe and sound, we had loads of fun, went thrifting, took lots of photos and played with a lot of vacuums. when I seen him coming down the road I was so excited. greeted him and had shown dave what lay in the depths of my garage. he looked at several of my machines and tried quite a few of them out. what was more exciting was when he pulled out the Electrolux 89 with powerhead from the car. another dream machine added to the collection, after about 45 min at the house we went to my storage unit where I had another 15 vacuums and I brought a couple of them home so we can do a couple of minor repairs, which never happened because of all of the fun we were having, in the meantime I did tear into my LUX g to find out that the commutator is bad and I now need a new one because the arching went from bad to worse in a matter of 5 min. dave spent Dinner with me and my family and we had a great conversation about vacuums and organs, pianos, and other things. all I can say is that I would deffinately have Dave back as a guest anytime he comes to NY
thanks dave for the great Afternoon

to follow some pics but Dave needs to post them since my camera was lost. lol when I find the camera I will post some pics of my finds and machines that I acquired

We're in luck! I'll keep posting until the signal di

Back at the Syracuse house, I'm picking up an unsecured (& insecure) signal from the house next door. It's at half strength and I don't know how long it will last but here goes...

Yes, Mike is one of the top nicest folks I've met in this hobby - a fine young feller with his head screwed on right side up. :-)

The drive down to Greene travels through spectacular low mountain valleys, long south to north where the glaciers receded like gargantuan dinosaur claw tracks. So, as you travel the two lane blacktops west to east it's a roller-coaster ride between peaks and valleys. I've traveled here in summer so I was able to imagine it all in full green splendor - as it was a cloudy overcast day. But quite mild.

Darn it, I can't seem to be able to send email out but I can receive it. So MIKE, this message is for you:

Darn it all, I feel like a doofus now. After looking for one of those for so long, big sadness to leave it behind. But, I have a solution!

I am leaving here early Thursday morning and the plan is to head down to Cortland and over to Ithaca on the wandering way back to Rochester and home. The weather looks good for Thursday. It would be a snap to veer over to Greene, get the Kirby drill cable from you (or off your front porch if you're not at home) and continue on my way to Ithaca. Or wherever you tell me you put it, like maybe on the seat of the Lawn Tractor in the garage? I'm really anxious to use it for polishing up a few vacuums for Xmas. :-) Oooh and then I could get the daylight pictures of Greene Architecture I wanted...

Sounds like a plan to me. I'll be in Greene Thursday morning around 10 AM, ok? I hope you'll be home but if not, I'll get the cable and the pictures. And by then I'll have all our pictures of the day burned to a CD for you or you can usb them into your computer.

It was a treat to meet you, too, Mike. You're sensible and funny and enthusiastic in the best way about your interests and sure know your stuff. It seems I do have a reliable wireless connection now and so I'll continue the story I started on the Forum today...I expect to get over to Oneida this afternoon or Wednesday.

Rich here, my host, has a new musical toy - a midi-playing banjo & guitar with a full array of percussion effects. All real intruments mounted to a big board, the frets are damped by a myriad of pneumatic fingers while the strings are plucked with rotating start wheels. We are tuning it up and making little adjustments after its shipping from California just last week. It is an amazing sight and sound.

His other 'new' toy is this massive WurliTzer orchestrion with 10 roll ferris wheel changer. He bought it many decades ago and until last year it was entirely painted Hospital Green (!) and not playing too well. Well, it just came back from the New Hampshire shop after a year's worth of restoration and cabinet stripping and refinishing. Wow! It too now also plays through a midi interface. Still plays rolls, though. :-)

Btw, those doorways are 7.5 feet high and you can see the organ console in the next room.

But meanwhile, back in Greene yesterday with Mike, This is his street as I drove up it. If you squint you can just make out Mike waving his arms and jumping up & down way in the distance past the stop sign.

No, not really...but he was out waving me in to the driveway when I got there. :-)

But I did find a Saltine Cracker can from 1978 and a new Melita Java Perk stainless steel coffee percolator with dark purple handle & base. Made this morning's coffee in it! Mmm, good. I decided it could join the Perc Collection as it is all stainless steel including the sprung grounds basket.

You are correct...that is not the original glass knob on top. Musta lost the original and fixed it. Someone enlarged the hole in the lid and skillfully inserted this vintage one and it fits fine without leaks. I will be on the lookout for something glass in a more bullet-like shape...
