I brought this vacuum home today from a sale - in very nice shape for it's age. The book is dated 1979 - but it definitely has an 80's look with the almond and brown. The chrome is very bright and really makes it sparkle.

I used it on the wood floors and rugs upstairs tonight and other than needing a new belt on the power nozzle, pre-motor filter and the foam filter at the bottom (which disintegrated and blew out of the base in a big puff of black dust - it was kind of comical really) it runs very well. I'm amazed at the suction power, and when combined with the awesome power nozzle - it really is an exceptional cleaner, as if we'd expect less from Hoover. I didn't really notice how heavy this thing was until I schlepped it a block to my car - built like a brick house! There are a couple of things I don't care for, the hose doesn't have a very good grip on it and it's not exactly the "silent servant" of the household, but it is purrdy with the chrome!

Does that one have the large rear wheels? Everyone who uses those says they are flawless performers.

IMO one of the main reasons to select a canister over an upright is portability. Imagine this beast falling down the stairs. I dont understand that clumsy hose/handle grip either.

And the famous Hoover falling-apart sponge muffler. I remember the thrill of getting a NIB Hoover quiet-series Quik-Broom on eBay a while back. So i rush to plug it in when it arrives (nib) and im greeted by a flurry of muffler crumbs. I bet every experienced Hoover user has his or her own crumbling muffler sponge incident!

Ah yeah, my Constellation has a crumbling muffler sponge, it's practically disintegrated.

Congrats on a fabulous find...

Greg, I thought you were cutting back.. lol... she is purdy though and I can see how you couldn't resist. Again, congrats.

I am cutting back - it's going home with YOU!

The "muff-sponge" was pretty funny, I was using in my bedroom and I kept seeing these little black puffs of stuff on the floor and chasing then with the hose - then there was another - and another. I kept thinking "where the hell is this coming from?" and then in one moment - almost the entire remains of the sponge poofed out at once, creating a cloud of black dust. Nice. I took it apart to make sure it was all gone and we wouldn't be spraying more throughout the house.

Greg that is a beauty!! And you thought you were all but done with the flying dust!!! That will sure be a fun machine to play with. Can't wait to see it in person.

it's going home with YOU!

Oh goody! LOL... I'll bring my checkbook. (Seriously Greg, if you don't want it, I'll be happy to buy it from you.) At the rate I'm acquiring vacuums I'll need to move by October. (Morgan and Fred N., don't quote me on that. lol) This is getting serious. I'm going to have to restrain myself in Omaha. This could be dangerous. But, at least I'll be among friends... lol... Your UPS store is going to be very busy.

Muff Sponge.

disclaimer: Hoover Company does not claim resposability for conception incurred by attempting to use the Hoover Celebritys "muffler sponge" as a female-use contraceptive.

(immature, yet tasteful..just you try and stop me :P)

=p

Crumbling muffler sponge sounds like a rock group. My late friend Russ got a phone call one afternoon, a woman asked to speak to his wife. Russ said "she's not home she's on a date." The woman proceeded to tell Russ all of the advantages of the contraceptive sponge. After she was done, he said "let me ask you a question."
"What's that?" asked she.
"Does it do windows?"
She hung up. Here's a pic of my favourite vac to keep this thread on topic!

Celebrity IV

Nice find Greg, '79-'80 is about right for it too. Your model is a bit more rare, thats the 2nd down from the top, the only real difference was a shorter hose.
The top model was the Jamaican blue/chrome
The Celebrity was Hoover's first serious canister

I have always felt the Constellation was Hoover's first serious canister. I understand in the Hoover "vaults" there is even a Constellation with a power nozzle. I would have loved to see a production version of that, although the turbo tool on the new Connie isn't half bad....

Very nice find Greg. BTW the original Celebrity was a floater sans wheels just like the Connie. I bought one of them new at the time for a then BF, no on board tools but it did have a power nozzle albeit the power cord wrapped around the hose and had to be plugged into the wall. I wished I had it now.
