I have an old Sears shop-vac with both the intake and exhaust ports on the top, and it uses a cardboard container. There is also a swiveling plastic carrying handle on the top.

Why cardboard? Maybe it was made when metal was being rationed, like just before or during WW2?

Does anyone know offhand anything about such a unit?

It's in the garage, hidden away, but I will get the model number and some pictures if anyone is interested.

Maybe for cost-the fiberboard container less expensive than a metal one.My Dad had one of these-He used it to vacuum our hair after he gave a haircut. You could only use the vacuum for DRY pickup-no wet pickup with these models.

My dad had

one he bought in the 60's. I think it was meant mainly for saw dust in a work shop, not wet pick-up.
The container was like an army green color. Plastics weren't really being used for shop vacs yet, or were still costly. Before DuPont or GE plastics, etc. made the pre colored plastic pellets cheaper to produce.

you can still get those cardboard drums, They use them for certain chemicals that cannot be transported in plastic or metal.
they are incredibly sturdy.

If it didn't say sears ontop of it I would have thought it was a home mad machine.
You have given me an idea
