Old Lux Wands?

Curious, did the older wands say XXX have chrome over copper metal?
I have a pair that looks like in places its worn or even scratched revealing copper?

would this be a xxx wand?
Still if this was the case would there be a rust or corrosion inside the wand?
Maybe its just encrusted years of debris?

What kind of wand came with the G's? Were they all aluminum...

Seems lux din't mark wands so I'm not even sure if the wands in question are for a XXX.

I'll give this a shot.......

I think chrome plating can sometimes be a four step process. I have parts re-chromed often and I've tried to get inquisitive with the guy that does it for me, sometimes he lets on how it's done. The surface that is to be chromed has to be free of blemishes and a lot of prep work goes into making sure that process is done carefully. Then, often times a plating of copper is applied - one, aid the nickel plating step (better electrical conductivity) and two, to provide yet a more perfect surface. Then the nickel plating is applied. Finally, the chrome plating (actually clear) is applied. It's the final application of chrome that gives the object the bright gleam and offers a lot of protection. Parts that receive wear, like your steel wands will over time start to show the copper. I've seen this on the bag inlet tube on my Lux model LX.

The wands that originally came with the Lux XXX had the Electrolux logo (circle, three stripes, with Electrolux running through it) em-pressed on the female (slotted) end of the wand. I don't know if this was practiced through-out the production run of XXX's or not, there are others more knowledgeable than I.

As far as I know, the Lux G had the anodised aluminum wands during it's entire production.

Chrome-plating is difficult to apply. the surface must be flawless for it to "stick". I'm sure no one cared if the inside of wands were pretty, and there is a cost factor - so yeah, the insides rust alright. Sometimes they rust together, and can't be gotten apart!

Thanks, makes some sense.
It;s sort of like electroplating with silver. In the good ole days it was over a copper base but these days copper itself has value.

electroplating is sort of a ion transfer from a solution.

So what your saying is they have a copper plating over steel?
I was wondering if the entire tubing was not copper than it would have some esthetic value to me.

these wands look to be chrome lux but they have no logo.

Well at least I have enough alum wands for my G's.

Speaking of Lux wands, was it common for Electrolux, after they introduced the sheath wand and power nozzle, to include the metal accessory wands when you bought the vacuum, or were they optional extras? When my Diplomat was new in 1990-1, it came with a set of the metal slotted wands. I also recall a great-aunt who had an Ambassador that came with a set of plastic accessory wands.

I've seen a lot of electrolux machines that have additional accessory wands, and I think they still do that today on the base model (although they are plastic). The thing you have to consider about the sheath wand is you would only be able to use the accessory with a full wand configuration. You can't use only one half of the assembley. The the seperate ones you can use just one wand if you don't need that much length.

Depending on how you look at it, that's the disappointing thing about the discontinuation of the telescopic wand (at least here in Canada; I understand it never really flew in the US). It could easily be used for both the power nozzle and accessories. On the con side, the plastic part of the telescopic wand isn't reinforced, so it could crack easily.

I have an original Lux 2100 & according to the manual its dated about 1989 as the manual has a date & it came with the PN 6B the plastic sheath & metal wand & the additional access wands that came with it were ribbed plastic not metal.

Hey Christine:

1989 was the second run for the 2100's They were brought back as a special model that was sold through some catalogues and as premiums for a couple of companies like Esso oil.

The original 2100's were made from 1985 - 1987 and only had one set of wands. The first ones came with the PN5 then later ones with the PN6

Thanks didn;t know they were made that early but thisone is at least 89/90 from manual date.
Mine came w a PN 6B which is nice as you can shut brushroll off with that model & that's bascially why I keep that one but the cloth hoses are there sore spots as they leak.

Motor to me sounds pretty much like my silverado 1505

Interesting little crevice tool. I've seen a few pictures of those but never one in real life. My great aunt's Ambassador had the same plastic wands (which are now, I believe, with the Diplomat my sister is using).
