I found this package of bags in a junk shop, yesterday. I could use the bags, if they will fit the new Constellation?
I want this woman's living room! I am just wondering how you get into it? Its hard to tell if there are steps behind her? If there are, it would be pretty akward to inch around the narrow sides. I like the art work on the right wall too. These bags were quite a bargain. I like how they were marked down from $1.00 to $.98.
The junk store charged $.50

A blast from the past

Wow, I remember when that line of vacuum bags were au current.  Conversation pits like the one pictured were commonly featured in home-decor magazines, and I really liked the one pictured on the bag package.  I liked that GE vacuum in the picture too.

I don't think the bags would fit the modern Constellation, the old ones are "Type J" and the modern ones are "Type S", both with different bag mounts, not to mention the older ones are probably just plain single-ply paper and would end up with a grounded constellation when they clog up... :)

constellation bags

Are the bags hard to find nowadays?  Does anyone need some?  This morning at a thrift store I ran across several packages of genuine Hoover bags for .99 per pk.  I'd be happy to run back and grab them for someone if they're a rare commodity.

There's loads of type J's on ebay.com, hence how I found the differences between the Type S and Type J, most aftermarket of course, cos the aftermarket parts market is pretty strong when it comes to older vacuum cleaners and other appliances, although I like to experiment with bags that weren't meant to fit other brands (Such as Kirby Poly. bags in my Sanitaire, Victor bags in the Juniors, Dirt Devil bags in my Vacuette, etc.)... :P

I try not to use my Portable that much because it picks up A LOT of dirt and bags are very hard to come by- not counting the one in it right now I only have two left.

Make some bags to fit then, take the card adaptor, buy some modern high filtration generics that are about the same size, take off the card adaptor plate, glue on the one from your original bag and hey presto, new bags, better filtration, and easy to obtain bags... :)

Type J bags actually work in the new Constellation, for a given value of "work", although it's difficult to get them to align right and once they fill up the arguably already useless turbo brush floor tool becomes even more useless (I tightened all the screws and taped the seams on my mom's unit, just to try to get a little more airflow through the goddamn thing). I have no idea why they changed the bag mount type, especially when there are tons of bags out there that say "To Fit Constellation". Maybe to stop people buying the third party bags? Even with the old-style bag packed to near bursting, the Connie still flies like it should, but there is a non-insignificant drop in suction and thus cleaning abilities. It does perform better with the correct bag type in.

Yeah the only reason I figured it out is because I collect vacuums so I came to the rescue when my mother ran out of bags, and I hadn't realized it used a different type, but was pleasantly surprised that it still worked. I wonder if they specifically designed it to "just barely work" so that it would be clear to the operator that he had the wrong bag, but that he also wouldn't be completely screwed by this turn of events -that is, buying the wrong bag even though the package says "Fits Constellation".

I thought that Hoover type J bags

were still available from Hoover. I can still order them from my trusty Hoover store in Sacramento. although I don't need any I have two cases of them (old grey ones) I guess i can still use them I think the ends of the bags or stapled not glued shut like some of the off brand bags. I always try to use Genuine bags and belts in all my vacuums.... Dan

IF that room was in my house

Surely would have to buy ANOTHER vac as my Kirbys would be quite a lot of work to haul down that Conversation pit thing! I'd love to be house hunting and find a place like that! lol!
