Well, since the metal appears to be cracked and has been repaired AND I believe I can see the suggestion of a cord protector peeking out from the backside, I'm going to stick my neck out and say it is one of those switch-on-handle numbers. Is it a Kirby 3R?

Yep!

Congrates Martin it is a kirby model 3R:o)
Oh! By the way the handle isn't cracked its just a mark that needs cleaning off. Its not been restored yet.

Hope to show you pics of it once its been done.

James :o)

Thanks, James. That was fun. Keep the puzzles coming!

The handle on my 3R is tragically cracked. Somebody overtightened the set screw with disastrous consequences. I guess the cut-out for the switch weakened the integrity of the metal...I don't suppose you have a spare???

Now, before any of you mega-purists say anything about my pics, know that I am painfully aware that my 3R is far from perfect. Besides the cracked handle, the original black grip was a lost cause. I fashioned a replacement by applying multiple coats of "Plasti-Dip". In the super close-up shots it looks pretty gross, but from across the room, not so bad.

Of course, the bag is wrong and, of course I have no business putting a rug nozzle with a belt lifter (red yet!) on this machine. The cord is not original and there is a question as to whether or not I have the correct handle fork and tube for a 3R.

Bad Marty, bad bad BADDD!

If I were you I'd find a good welder in your area that had aluminum welding capabilities. Once welded you could probably buff out most of the damage. Any pictures of the complete machine?

Yes, but I'm sure shipping to "the other side of the pond" must cost a king's ransom? Does it not?
