I have used and owned and sold a few Orecks. I don't think their that bad really. I do prefer the older ones prior to the 4 amp motors. The 4 amps is far too loud for me. I guess a 2 speed would be fine but I have not had one of those yet.
What sort of motor is Oreck using in their red commercail models?the one the janitors use out here at work is LOUD!sounds like a banshee.Its so bad I almost have to get the earplugs if I have to work around the guy using it.The previous janitors used Sanitaires-they were so much better and quieter!The tone the Sanitaire made was not as annoying.Home Orecks aren't as loud.Orecks are only good for SHALLOW pile indoor-outdoor carpeting like what most motels use.also the fancases that are in Oreck vacuums are CHEAP-break so easily.The fan is tougher than the fancase.
I've never used an Oreck upright, but I have three of their little vacuums, and those do work well, for the record. But I use them when I don't want to mess up the Hoovers!

My impression was that it's very good at making you think it's doing a good job. It's ear-splittingly loud, and brings up crushed nap nicely, but it's not doing anything more than sweeping fluff and litter off the surface.
It's one of those items where the consumer sees the high price and assumes it's justified. There's nothing about the design or construction of the cleaner which warrants such a high price.

The oreck we have at home is earsplitting it gives me a headache, sometimes it evan sounds like a car horn it is about a 2004. My grandma has a 2007 model and when it is on thick, deep carpet it only makes a low, quiet noise. she also has a 2003-2004 2-speed model.

XL2-Ultra, got it for my birthday. Its not nearly as bad as I thought, but the irony is its harder to push on my plush carpeting than my old faithful 1070 Convertible! What I do like is the Oreck cleans a bare floor very well, and it does a decent job on my carpets too. It swallows all the dog hair, where a Dyson wouldn't!

the only good oreck is the $750 oreck xl 21,it has a quiet motor when on low,and a stiffer brush roll which pulls the machine forward,it has led lights,the only other good one is the big 1400 canister with the power nozzle it also cleans well and has a headlight like the miele.
In the resturant I worked at we had went through tow orecks in less than one year they were both rebuilt and ruined again. Then they got us a kenmore Progressive from Sears that could be beaten to hell and was there for 5 years and still running when I quit. So much for the Orecks

I stretched to "clean" the A C vent. I strained my back!! I'm walking around like Tim Conway as Mr. Tudball.. NOW, if I had one of my trusted HOOVERS, the "telescoping wand" would have saved me. No traitor here, lolol

My partner gave me the top of the Oreck XL21 for my birthday, it is my daily driver. There is a huge difference in its performance over the other models.
I must say, it cleans very well and requires little or no effort in use. They have a wonderful bag system. I also use it when I clean for a friend in WI. It does a wonderful job in her home and I do think it cleans deeper than we give it credit. The bag on that machine fills very quickly. It is not a small bag it is always has it's fair share of sand and other grit that I consider to be deeper types of dirt in the carpet.
Price is out of this world, but I have to give them credit, still American made, still doing all of thier production here in the states...more than you can say for most companies. Kirby may be the only other company that can still claim that.

I'm totally sold on aluminum wands for reaching the high places or horizontally over large furniture with ease. I connect two telescopic Hoovers together to reach up to the 11 foot ceiling cobwebbed corners.
The GE TIDY has aluminum wands, too and that hung-over-the-shoulder mini vac will prove to be even more perfect for the basement beams. The house is 114 years old now and can't help but leak around the edges.

my ceilings are 10 ft
on both floors. So, the stairway is a 20 ft span. TALK ABOUT "WINDTUNNEL" !! Several telescopiong wands are great.

I'll always wonder why GE abandoned their excellent aluminum wands in favor of chromed steel - I suppose it was a design directive for the 1950s shiny modern look. the Roll-Easy stayed with aluminum into the 1960s and that was it.

I would love to try out the XL21. I had purchased an Oreck XL Ultra 2 years ago for my house and then another one for my grandmother house to replace the Electolux Epic 3500 I kept there. The Oreck cleaned well but I didnt feel like it deep cleaned. It did however groom the carpets very well and the warranty was excellent. I have mostly bare floors in my house and it just wasnt the right machine for me. I sold it on Ebay and then put in my VacuFlo system which i wouldnt trade for anything!! I also got rid of the one at my grandmothers house shortly after I sold mine and left my Diamond Jubilee there. The DJ was more convenient for me since I was doing more and more of the cleaning as her aids needed more time to care for her and had less time to clean the house. I purchased her machine as a floor model with a full warranty from the Oreck dealer that is literally 2 minutes from my house, for half the price of a new one, and sold it for what i paid for it. The little canister I received free with mine was a total piece of garbage! I wouldnt give them more than $25 for it if I had to buy it seperately. I think the Ultra XL is a good choice for someone that has very low pile wall to wall and wants something that is light weight. I also felt that it was quite loud and could have used some noise dampening material for the price tag. The XL21 sounds like a much better machine but the price is rather steep.
