Darn it all anyway. Who woulda thunk it? Made me mad enough to spit. Oh well, some one I visit will have one I can scan this winter. And it did cost him $52.

Before Ebay went anonymous you'd know this feller was bidding and could drop out accepting inevitable defeat...or drive the price through the roof. Now with anonymity there's a whole lotta unsuspecting folks gonna be crushed at the last second after days of hopeful delusion.

I'm tired and indulging in a bit of healthy whining; it is just an Owner's Manual.

He might be one of us in which case you have my grudging admiration, Sir. Are you single? Wanna go out on a date? :-)

A related question.

I might be mistaken here, but I always thought that it was in poor form to try to outbid a fellow club member on ebay. If I ever knew someone from the club was bidding on something, I wouldn't bid against him or her. I thought everyone else felt the same, but this makes me think that that sentiment isn't global. Did I confabulate all of this? If I did, then I still think that sniping a fellow club member is in extremely poor taste.
 
I agree with you Patrick... I always tried to practice the same thing as you, and if I recognized the screen name as a fellow club member, I wouldn't bid.

But now, you can't see the name of who is bidding on any particular item. So it's a moot point. When placing a bid on an item nowadays, I could be bidding against you, I could be bidding against Willie Nelson. Even when the auction is over, you can't see the history of who bid--it's only the winner of the item whose name you see.

Exactly the point I was clumsily trying to make.

Indeed it is rude to get in a bidding war with a fellow collector and in the past when I could contact the other person beforehand I could and would do that if the item was of extreme passionate interest to me to determine if it was to him as well. Anytime I was not hell-bent on winning the item I would drop out. If we both 'had to have it' then it was may the better funded man win.

I have my own history of absolutely having to have something at any cost but not absurdly, I think. I know a rare desirable one when I see it. More often I have acquired many nice things at bargain basement prices when no one else was interested. It all evens out.

This particular bidder has hasn't identified himself as a member. Based on his history, the times I watched items won at extraordinarily inflated prices and examining all his feedback as seller and buyer I long ago came to the conclusion he is not one of 'us' but more of a deep pockets 'trustfund' investor/hoarder. I learned the hard way that any time his name appeared in a bidding it was best to withdraw from the competition. I know the type from the Player Piano hobby and they really suck the fun out of it.

I may be completely wrong but until I have confirmation over speculation that he's one of us I'll keep power8967p4m where I pegged him over the past 4 years.

Perhaps I'll be eating crow this time next week. :-)

Sadly, that's the way ALL auctions are run. I don't think there is any comeraderie when it comes to bidding at any auction.. It's a grown-up's game. The highest bidder wins. That's just the way it is - the sweet and sour story.
In the early Ebay days, there were just a few of us bidding on someone's old used stinky vacuum cleaner. The bidding was fun because not too many folks were interested in such things, nor did most folks understand such a strange interest.. You stood a good chance of getting what you wanted for a reasonable bid. It's a different story now, with many more club members, not to mention major media coverage. We're out of the closet, so to speak (no pun intended).
I know how you feel.
PS...I am not the bidder! ;-D
 
Patrick, Fred, & Dave,

I agree with you guys, I never bid on something if I know another club member is bidding on it. That's just common courtesy, I think. However, with the "security measures" ebay has taken,you never know who else is bidding on something.
As for power8967, he's stomped on my bids more than once, and I don't think there's anyone he hasn't sniped, and usually at a RIDICULOUSLY HIGH price. I don't know if he really wants what he bids on that bad, or if he's not happy unless he feels he's taken something away from someone else, but he obviously has no morals. Sure, I know ebay is an AUCTION, and the HIGHEST bidder wins--but I think he takes things just a little TOO FAR!!!

I agree. But with ebays new security measures you could be bidding against yourself as well. There is no way of knowing. And, after some of the problems I've had with them and paypal not honoring their own rules I really wouldnt be surprised.
 
Sniping

I undertook a small effort to review the bidding history of this person. Sniping is all he does. His only bids are seconds before an auction closes. Given that everything I looked at is a vintage vacuum, I can't help but wonder if he might be a club member, but I hope not. That's not how a friend behaves.

You are correct. We did all talk about this very subject a few years ago. That was when we were a small club. When I first joined some of my most beautiful machines were GIVEN to me by a fellow collectors. For this very reason I have never gotten envolved with ebay.We all did a lot of trading machines back then too. I think it was more fun. I will never forget one time several of us spotted a certain rare machine at the same time and a club member let the collector who was crazy for this machine have it! What a wonderful demonsrtration of friendship.

Patrick here is an example of what was given to me by fellow club members:
(1) complete 60 Electrolux with tools
(2) complete first Hoover Constellation with tools and box
(3) early RexAir with tools
(4) parts for Air-Ways
but I have given to club members:
(1) model 12 Electrolux with tools
(2) tan Electrolux G
(3) instruction books and paperwork from 50's machines
Of course this was before e-bay came along
and who knows how much we have all traded vacs!
A lot of nice memories and friends.

Gee I almost forget about one of my vac friends that helped me get new machines at very god prices over the years with the original boxes! I sure am grateful for our club!
