Hello All, just posting about central vacs & the one they installed in my home.
Central vac systems weren't even on my radar until many years ago: I was helping restore a 1929 movie palace in North Jersey. They had both a Spencer Central Vacuum & a Spencer Orgoblo in the theatre's basement. (The central vac wasn't being used anymore.)
Later on, two older elementary schools nearby that I've been in had inlets remaining along with piping leading to their basements, but the units were long gone.
In 2006/07, my wife & I decided to build a home in a new development. Because of a reason we won't get into here, we found ourselves with a sizable chunk of change to add upgrades to our new home. One of these was a full-house Central Vacuum System for $2250. 7 outlets (3 upstairs, 3 down... and a utility next to the unit in the basement). We checked the box for it & it was installed as the house was being built.
When we moved in, we saw that the unit was a builder's-grade NuTone VX475. Received a large box of accessories with it (CK250). It honestly worked great.... for a little over two years.
After the warranty ended... so did this unit. I later came to find out that the "VX" series from NuTone were so bad, they actually stopped the assembly lines to make a couple critical fixes. (I also read about this on Vacuumland... see Post 137553, Reply #10) When I contacted NuTone about this, they sent out a "Post-fix" unit at no charge, even though outside of the warranty. They didn't even want the non-working unit back!
I was skeptical about the "fix"... I also gave it 2 years.
Welp, here we are 16 years later.... unit works just as strong as it ever did. Yep, it actually does a great job in our home, & love how it vents outside. We can hardly hear it when it runs & I've picked up a few extra parts for it (duplicates of the original parts that came with it when new just to future-proof in.... even grabbed a few NOS outlets in case we break one of them.)
Yes, yes... I know there's some distain for central vacs, builder's grade units, NuTone-anything, broccoli.... but we love using the lightweight hose to do our vacuuming... doesn't bother us one bit.
Here's to many more years with our NuTone Central Vacuum!
