Does anyone have one of these in their collections? It looks to me like possibly one of the most robustly constructed canister(ish) vacs imaginable. Apparently the M-1 "pig" has been around for quite some time, and the company goes back even further, with ties to Bissell.
Would love to have a Pig, but a little expensive even on the used market. But an 8" aluminum fan and one heck of a serious motor.... wow!

Cheers
Doug E.

I have two M1's...

...and they're one of my favorites.

M-1's are some of the most prominent vacuums I recall from my childhood. They were used by our school district and by BC Ferries until both switched in the mid-90's to Numatic Henry's.

That really is a serious vacuum if I ever saw one. I did read the company history pages, and found it fascinating that the company exists pretty much as it has for nearly a century. That said, I have never seen a pig in person, but oddly enough, my high school in rural Pennsylvania had Numatic Henry's! Not sure how a little school district in the middle of nowhere got sold a herd of Henrys, but I have not thought about them until just now!

How bog is the fan on that NSS? I have a Victor Europa 271 that has an 8-Inch fan in it, and going by the size comparison, I think the Victor's fan looks to be bigger than the Pig's (compared here with my Sanitaire):

Yes, the Pig is an awesome machine. I had a very old one once upon a time, maybe the first model. The body was plain metal instead of yellow-painted, and it had a dark blue cloth bag. The suction power was just tremendous! One day I hooked up one of my Electrolux polisher attachments to it, and I thought that thing was going to take off into outer space!!

I've yet to properly try out the Victor (sold over there as a Clarke 500 I think), but I doubt it is as powerful as a Pig, but we'll see, if I ever get a chance to have the house to myself even for just a day... :S

NSS M1 PIGS-YES-THE vacuum!!!I have three-their price isn't that bad compared to new Kirbys and other hi end vacuums. One of my pigs is over 30 yrs old(i am the orig purchaser and owner)I replaced the bearings and motor brushes-half hour job-And its still going like new.The machines are the easest to service.
And the Giant upright shown in the above picture link mine is very similar-its a Powerflite. And yes its kinda fun and neat to use-and the feedback as things go into its metal fan!!!Just as much fun as the PIG.The pigs have been one of my favorites-the old one started out when I was doing some contract radio station maintenance.Great for cleaning out transmitters and transmitter sites. And I also have the powernozzle. That power nozzle also goes with the NSS Designer Dry tank type vacuum.Got to give it to the PIGS-their design is so long lived-50Yr old one still work today.NSS has one they got from a movie theater that had used it for over 50 yrs to slurp up popcorn and candy wrappers from auditoriums. Now its in NSS's museam and they demo it to visitors and prospects.I had seen the NSS pigs advertised in movie theater trade magazines.and the Bank Of America used them at one time for the janitorial crews to clean banks after hours.(Any money get into that big bag?)And the White House used them-when the Daycon janitorial Supply in Wash DC delivored my first Pig-there were several others on their truck-the driver said they were going to the White House! My Pigs are used to clean out any older vacuums I get for my collection. The newest Pigs are Black in color-not bright Yellow as the older ones-and NSS no longer has the Yellow "Horse" logo on the bag or nameplates-now its an orbital figure type thing.Like the HORSE!!!And I am still lookingfor a NSS BRONCO Wet-Dry vacuum.

I find the sound of the Pig quite pleasent-not a "Screamer" of a vacuum. The Oreck here at work would drown out any Pig!!And the Pig would outdo the Oreck! The NSS company has MANY carpet nozzle designs-true the powernozzle is better. Most schools though had bare floors at the times the Pigs were suggested to them.

I could see how the Pig would be great in any movie theatre or auditorium. Cleaning between rows of seats with most vacuums is usually quite a pain, unless, like the pig it has a long hose that can do an entire row with the machine itself in the aisle.
Not to mention, it would be just the thing for any classroom with a linoleum floor and a zillion desks to vacuum around.

The Pigs are touted to be good for cleaning offices with lots of desks, chairs, computer&phone cables on the floor, etcThis is where they suggest the plain carpet tool.Says NSS-"Unlike regular upright cleanrs-the Pig has no brushroll for cables to be caught in".And in one of NSS pictures they show a Pig used with a "High-Up" attachment to clean a HVAC vent grille. And the machine is suggested for Church & Chapel cleaning-they sell a tool set for that purpose. All in All the Pig is a pretty versitile machine.

I got a pig in my collection. My boss gave it too me. There great for vacuuming out vehicles. My neighbors like it because of the long hose and the claw tool I have for it. I have the old cloth shake out bag.
