My anniversary Hoover which I recently purchased, used once from FB marketplace got suction relief mods to the front bumper,4 small holes across with my drill. It's not rare, and it's not vintage, so I figure I should modify it so I can use it! With my new carpets it's simply would clamp down and not move, just like it did with the previous owner. My brother thought it was beautiful so I gave it to him but with new carpets he had the same issue it came back. It now works just fine with that I figure if I ever go to old school carpeting or something I could just put some tape across some of the holes. Just sharing my success not debating or anything just an update.

Makes me wonder why carpeting companies never bothered to inform people upon purchase or do any testing beforehand that rubber backed ultra plush carpet will cripple vacuums?

My carpet is still nylon webbed and I haven't had any issues with it. Interestingly I tested on rubber backed outdoor mats and this did not happen with those. It's something I guess with how the carpet fibers trap air and create an airtight seal since the rubber can't let air through from below the carpet. If someone can invent some kind of adapter plate that clips onto the bottom of the vacuum to achieve what you did that would fit on any type of vacuum, I bet they'd be a millionaire.

None of these are rubber backed it's just an extremely dense and tight backing tight weave but in effect the same thing no air flow

Good idea but

It would have been better to have cut notches into the front of the baseplate so the air relief was still on the top of the carpet similar to the current Aerus power nozzles. The rep at my Mom’s local store recommended that type of power nozzle when she was having trouble with her PN4A because the carpet is dense and has a rubber pad. It solved the issue and still cleans beautifully.

I do like the tape to return to the full suction option you have though.

You know John my Silverado has the 4A power nozzle and I don't have any trouble with it go figure.

Could be

The type of carpet you have. We have dense thick Chinese rugs where the PN 4a sticks to it but on the rugs in the other rooms which are not that type it works fine. Once we changed to the L shaped nozzle with the vents in the front snd sides and put a new brush in it too, it seems to glide right along those dense Chinese rugs beautifully.

Now part of it I admit is my Mom…I didn’t really have much problem pushing the pn4a myself but it’s different for my aging Mom with the arthritis in her hands. It’s horrible as I see how much trouble she has with so many other things around the house. She can hardly pick up a half gallon jug of milk. She has to put very few items in grocery bags or she can’t carry them. I feel badly for her and am considering getting her some CBD oil to try or Voltaren but Voltaren has so many side effects so I think the CBD would be a first try.

Back when I sold Rainbows in 1979/1980, the salesmen always took the power nozzles out of the box and we drilled four holes above the bumper to improve ease of use on the shag carpets of the day. That's why you'll find so many of those eureka-built Rainbow power nozzles with holes drilled in them today.
