My aunt's 20 year old Maytag died last week. Of course, no repairman wants to even touch it.
So....... the hunt began. My very close friend, Tom Anderson is an advocate for Speed Queen......Whirlpool and Maytag are dirty words in North Canton.
So, tomorrow, a brand new Speed Queen is being delivered to her house, to the tune of.... $900.50 WOW. She told me, "You'll be using this for years after I'm gone". I told her, "I hope it wears out first". It will sit next to her 33 year old GE dryer. Can you believe that?
My matching Maytags are almost 30. My mother went to Ireland to visit family. While she was gone, our GE washer and Hotpoint gas dryer died 2 days apart. She returned, opened the door to the laundry room and yelled, "What happened"? I replied, "Nine hundred dollars happened ".... the matching Maytags. A repairman came, saw them and said, 'My gosh.they look like they just came out of the box. Do whatever you can to save them'. And, so, I will.

I wonder

if you aunt had the Maytag Performa washer, because my Dependable Care Maytag was 20 years old, and still worked perfect. The Performa line were Norges.
Yes, I'm sure Maytag and Whirlpool are dirty words in Canton Ohio, after they closed Hoover down.

Mike,

It didn't say, "Superba" or "Performa" anywhere on it. It read, "Maytag, Heavy Duty, Large Capacity". My late uncle had a 'Superba" dishwasher.
I'll post pics of mine again, too. They are workhorses. They don't get HARD use, but steady use....about 3 loads a week,......for almost 30 years. Each of mine had a small repair, that's all. I hope they last a long(er) time.
The dryer is gas. [this post was last edited: 8/2/2016-14:33]

I had

those very same machines in 1988. Yes, I too waxed them. I left the washer with my ex in '93, and took the dryer. It lasted 18 years total with my two step kids also.
I was working too much, and they did not tell me it was making a scraping noise in time to salvage the drum from being cut up by the worn out rollers and cabinet.

We received our Maytag Dependable Care set as a wedding gift from my parents in 1998.  Our washer had to be ordered from the factory because of us requesting the suds-saver feature.  This was at the end of Maytag's production of suds-saver models.  The washer has only needed two repairs.  Both times it was a because of a manufacturing defect in the tub seal.  So far, the third time has been the charm.

We got a new

Dependable care fabric-matic in '95 when we moved into this home. The only repair I had to do on it was the cracked water fill hose at the clamp on the plastic piece that fills the tub.
It was still working perfectly when we donated to a needy family in 2011.
Regret parting with it now.
