I am looking to get a new vacuum cleaner. Preferably a bagless upright, but I'm open to ideas. Anybody got any good suggestions? Price range is around $100 - $150. I plan on selling the Eureka Whirlwind, I just don't like or use it that much anymore. When I do vacuum, I've been using the gold old Tristar CXL.

DJ...it depends on the kind of cleaning you need to do. If you are looking at cleaning carpets and broadloom, you can definitely get a great performer in your price range: Consumer Reports has given high scores to the Hoover Tempo Widepath U5140-900 Bagged Upright ($80) and the new Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Rewind UH70110 Bagless Upright ($130). They also liked the new Eureka AirSpeed AS1000A bagless upright for $100 - it is listed as a Best Buy.

These uprights are really not great at cleaning anything other than carpets. For non-carpet cleaning, you need to invest in a good straight suction canister that may run you around $300 to $400 dollars.

T series

I'll second that if you want a bagless then the T series machines are decent the airspeed has a low efficiency cyclone and then a pleated filter, the T series is dual cyclonic and has a washable pre-filter and a post motor hepa i had a T series just for something...different

Stick with the Tristar, they're easier to maintain, simple to look after, and of course, last more than a year before burning out the motor... :)

Not to mention, changing bags is so much easier than the constant maintenance of a bagless, just open it up, lift out the bag, throw it away, put in a new one, and close up!! :)

Unlike with bagless vacs where you need to pull the bin off, empty it out while holding your breath and keeping your eyes shut, then sweeping up the mess cos you missed the wastebin, then scraping out the stuff out of the bin that stayed stuck due to damp or static (or both), and then using another vac to clean out the pre-filter so it doesn't clog up and cause the motor to overheat, or replacing the expensive filter(s) every so often to maintain airflow, etc. etc. etc., so much fiddly maintenance to keep the thing going!! It's no wonder so many end up dumped out on the kerb... :&#92

my bad.... it posted in the wrong section. i'm definatelly going to keep the tristar, i just need an upright for the carpets in my house.

main features it has to have: extend/strech hose, turbo tool, on/off brushroll (not a total nessiciaty but major plus)

Yes, I think that would work. My T series bagged has good power and agitation, some minor thing irritate me, but all seem to have that! Not a bad sound either, and heat protected motor.Made in Mexico, not sure about the bagless.

it's only 50 dollars but...

its awsome, ant they work great, you can get it at wal-mart,it's called the Bissel power force i bought one and i love it.

just like when i changed my job.... i'll listen to your opinion/ideas but its what i want or whats gonna work out for me best.

i like that air extreme. almost exactly the same as the eureka the boss smartvac that my "dad" and his girlfriend have.

How old...

is the hose on the Tri Star? On a canister, a hose is a wear part. It scars on the inside from all the sand it sucks up. $150.00 should buy you a new hose and brushroll, pop a new belt on and you will have a deep cleaning machine way better than nay big box upright

there is NOTHING wrong with the tristar cxl! i just prefer uprights for my daily cleaning, and canisters for crevices/stairs/cars (although the tristar NEVER goes outside for any reason).

Hoover T series

If you really want a bagless vacuum, the Hoover Tseries is an excellent choice. They don't lose suction very fast, and the filter stays clean for quite a while. If you put a new belt in it, the brushroll is Very aggressive and really digs down deep. It has good suction, but poor attatchments. I use the pet rewind as a daily driver and am very pleased so far; I've used it for 7 months now and durability isn't an issue. All in all it's a great machine!
