Hi all,
Found this forum today and wanted to say hello.Now I am getting my Kirby out of the attic and going to clean it up and display it.Have had it for 15 years it was built in 1975.Always loved it, but never thought of it a s a collectible.My main collections are vintage fans and wind-up alarm clocks.Look forward to reading more about everyone's vacuums.

Kirby Heritage-1975 and Freshnd-Aire-1936

Here is my Kirby, cleaned it up some today. What does everyone use to polish aluminum? Also pictured is my Freshnd-Aire-with bakelite blade. Kirby was given to me by a friend because his wife couldn't push it, too heavy. The fan I traded an old coffee table, that I picked out of someone's trash.

Wow love the fan! The Kirby is actually a mid 80s model.

I collect fans as well as vacuums.

The clock is a reproduction and the rug was painted by my wife- measures 12'-15'
There is a stamp on the bottom of the kirby that says 84, 1984? I guess. I was always told it was 1975, oh well mid 80's was my prime lol.

If it were from '75 then your Kirby would be a Classic Omega 1-CB. The Heritage II was produced from 1984 to 1987, then as the Heritage II Legend from 1987 to 1988 and as the Legend II from 1989 to 1990.

The "84" in the serial # tag would point to a 1984 manufacturing date.

The Heritage II is a nice vacuum. If I were you I would convert it to take the newer paper bags (HEPA bags)all you need to do is change the top bag adapter off the fill tube, you can find them on ebay. That is what I did with my Heritage 84 and will do with my Tradition and Heritage II as well.

I love how old fans look and I want to collect them, they seem hard to find! I love old clocks as well, once again it seems the antique dealers scoop them up and charge crazy prices. I did buy these 2 (the one does work) at a yard sale for a couple bucks. Westclock Baby Ben style 6 1949-56.

I find....

it interesting that so many of you who collect vacuums, collect fans as well. I never got the urge-strange...even though I've fixed many a fan. The older ones are quite beautiful and came in many decorative colors!

I DO collect clocks and vintage hi-fi gear. The hi-fi stuff is my real passion (clocks used to be)....although it's a horribly expensive hobby if you want the stuff to work 100%. I'm ashamed at how much money I've spent on that hobby! I collect cars too, but they get the short shrift compared to other passions....all but one car. I used to collect knives because they are relatively cheap, but I reached a saturation point with them. Recently, I had my old RCA CED player repaired and started collecting the CED discs. I don't recommend that hobby, however unless you like to torture yourself with 'skips' and weird color tones.;-) Now I'm into vintage camping gear and backpacks. I know...I sound kinda 'lost'.....oh and then there's the RC stuff & chainsaws.

I'll be dangerous when I finally get a digital camera...have really nice 35mm's/lens & accessories and two old tape camcorders. Right now, I have no way to post pics except to convert from 35mm.:-(

Kevin, I think it's pretty common to have wide-ranging interests when it comes to collecting.  The interests can shift over time, but if you have the collecting "bug" there's always a possibility of finding a new passion.  Whether it's the functionality, engineering and mechanics of things, or the beauty of vintage design, we all love to surround ourselves with the things that make us go "wow!" 


 


Digital cameras have come a long way and fairly good ones can be had relatively inexpensively.  Just be careful, you never know when the next obsession will suddenly appear, and you might end up with yet another collection!

Neil, I think you're spot-on; collecting interests can & do change over time. I just need to fight the desire to fix anything old I take pity on. And I don't want to become a 'hoarder'....like the people on cable who have aisles between the junk in their houses! However, I feel I should be more organized....but that would probably be pleasing someone else, after all.;-)

And then when you're handy, folks will hit you with their needs as well. I don't mind fixing stuff for others, but there's only so much time in a day!

Yeah, I know how cheap digital cameras have become and I was even offered one for free...I should dive in I suppose...thanks for the pep talk!
