The Find: 6 miles from work picked it up during lunch.
I acquired a lightly used Royal 886.
Needs some elbow grease to shine up the housing from 25 years of storage. Internally the wood brush-bar is still set to 1 without any discernible wear. It came with 2 of 4 original bags as well as two spare belts the original shop packed in. It appears to have been purchased 5/1/1987 so it is among the first 886 models.
The second owner exclusively uses a commercial QRECK to clean homes and never ran this one but moved it to 3 homes.
I wanted a non bypass design vacuum to work in conjunction with plans to switch back to dry cleaning with my new Oreck Orbiter. My Eureka is a non bypass but was getting tired and lacking in style for my 1940 home.
My understanding of this machines history is it was used by an Aunti to vacuum two area rugs in a home that was otherwise hard wood. Slightly used so I have time to find some new brushes.
My initial maintenance:
I cleaned the fibers from the wood beater brush/bearing area tomorrow I will add a drop of oil to the rear bearing. Straight 30 weight just like the included manual recommends.
I installed one of the two new Type A Royal Bags and will order some Eureka F&G bags for back up.
Thoughts:
The machine is surprisingly light and easy to maneuver. The dial height adjustment is just about as simple as it gets to match the job at hand.
I can see why everyone likes these all metal upright designs. My Eureka 7575 ESP was in need of new belts and bags which would have cost me half of what I paid for this gem. I will put my last Z type fresh bag in and send it to Goodwill where it should find another 5-10 years of service.
Question:
My first Post... Can anyone advise if aftermarket brush assemblies have ever been created for this 6A motor. I could always rebuild with generic carbon but it would be nice to have one assembly on hand to facilitate rebuilding the current set.
I think it is a little late to send in the warranty card but I should get another 30 years out of this one.
A set of NOS brushes would be the best if any collectors are hording a case of them.
Regards
Matt
