No it's not slow............
It's such a long, long, story. How? why? I am still in disbelief myself. I grew up in 32 foster homes, my father died at 27, I was 6. My brother and best friend was killed at 16, I was 14. I ran away at 14 and have been on my own since. I have one daughter age 30, and 5 grandchildren. I have worked 12, 16, 18, hours a day for the past 22 years. I have only taken one sick day off in 22 years. my daughter and I don't talk since I have become homeless. No come up for her any more, so sad to say such a thing about my own child. I could stand before you a 1000 of my customers that want nothing more to see me behind a work bench again. My heart aches to the very core of my soul with a simple thought of how I miss my friends so. I needed them in my life, for they were my life. Funny how it's not the person that defines who you are, it's the job.... Who knew? I believe you have to give a little, to get a little. Truth will always prevail,it may take 5 min. or 5 years. It truly will. I must have done someone wrong somewhere. I'm at a lost. Peace Out.

Hopester, my heart goes out to you. I, too, have fallen on hard times. It seems like 'hard times' have become an epidemic these days. I truly hope things improve on your end. Are you selling things piece by piece or just all at once? There are a bunch of things I'd love to buy. Can you email me if you are able to sell off only a few things and ship them. If you can't ship or things must go all at once, I hope that someone will buy. There is just so much that you have that I'd love to get.
I hope some good comes your way.
Justin

Truly sad......:(

Did not realize that bad hopefully good karma will come your way.
The reason i asked is becuase most shops are hurting now, people with the disposable mentality and Wal-Mart shopping behaviour.

I think this.....

was an arduous task for Hope, to say the least...trying to sell this stuff and keep up with all our email and offers. I think there's always room for a business of refurbished stuff-like old vacuums. But you have to have a clever gimmick...like pitting old vacs against new in certain conditions on a floor near or in your shop. But there's a caveat there as well; folks these days want new, even at the expense of a 'disposable', basically unserviceable product.

Even my own son who lives in a little apartment in Manhattan with his GF. They have hardwood floors...I offered to send a restored LUX with the right attachments for his circumstances. I could hear the GF objecting in the background; "Too old, too big, too heavy" etc. They are both victims of their own disposable prison.....and so it goes. If they can see dirt swirling around in that D thing, they think it's great. I've never seen a generation more manipulated by advertising hype/deception.

Real1...
You are so right Real1, i love the old of times long past, things were made with pride by people who loved there jobs. People seemed to me to be real back in the day. I wish i was a speck of dust with eyes to see and ears to hear, floating along the breeze through times past......It's so sad to think that there will be know one around anymore to tell us how it was back then. I think it is the worst loss for our feature......Hopester

Kirbykid... I left you a message on the other post about thr free G-5 I would like to give you......Hopester

I don't think its a modern thing at all to want the latest thing. A while ago I had the chance to meet up with a eldely gentelman who owned one of the most succesfull Hoover agency's in SA.

I happened to mention something along the same lines about every one wanting the latest vacuum  and he stoped me dead in my tracks.

He said it was always been that way, in the 50,s and 60,s Hoover was the vacuum to have and it had to be the latest one. He the told me when Hoover launched the 652 ( convertable ) here they had customers bringing in there perfectly good working 612's and 638's to trade them in on a new one, they had 3 rooms full of them ( no clue how big the rooms were) He said a young couple would come in to buy new Hoover appliances and he would show them the secondhand 638 and they would say no it needs to be that one pointing at the 652, it had to be the latest. the same ith washing machines aswell.

Then came the sentence that shocked me to bits, possibly because SA homes are smaller than USA homes and in general people tend to throw away stuff rather than put it in a attic or basement ( SA homes have neither) he ended up with to many and needed to get rid of them, his only option was a metal scrap dealer who took what he described as many 612's and 638's many in perfect  conditon ro be scrapped.

It had to be New and shiny but those were the 50's and 60's the time of big Chryslers, big hairs do's and big Hoovers.

Nothing has changed , when you get your first apartment together and you have good jobs everything has to be brand new, yours no one elses, wait till the kids come and the expenses start piling up that mind set changes fast very fast

crap. i posted it on the rong thread. i need a gray cord with red ends and a all gray cord with the round female end. my 518 is stuck with an ugly tan cord and my 515 has a dead cord. thanks

Real1 is dead on!

I couldn't agree more. I think my grandparent's generation had it figured out. You bought a quality machine ONCE, and took care of it. That is the reason we come across old Hoovers with service dates spanning several decades. I come across these more often than not. In fact, I have a Hoover 61 that has service dates starting in 1949 and the last (legible) date being 1990, this is AT LEAST 41 years of use. The machine in question was basically serviced every one to three years, just as the owner's manual suggested. I think that speaks volumes about the way people, in the US anyway, appreciated quality in the first half of the twentieth century.

Of course people wanted new features, gadgets, and modern styling. Many machines were traded in for newer models, or when needs changed. I agree with you totally, Real1. My generation has things completely backwards. To many, it is simply easier to buy a cheap POS machine that can be tossed in the trash when it gives any hint of trouble. Not to mention the "modern marvel" vacuums make servicing almost impossible. There is a reason that cleaners that are sixty to eighty years old are still cleaning today! They were built to last a lifetime...and in many cases more than one lifetime!

It's unfortunate that people have this mindset, and are more than willing to hand over money to purchase trash. I think this will start to change once people realize how many vacuums they have gone through, and how ridiculous it is.I have several friends in the vacuum repair/service industry, and have been told many of their customers are steering clear of the "latest fad" plastic trash in favor of the tried and true machines. I think it goes without saying that newer isn't always better!

HOPESTER~ THANK YOU!:-) I will call you as soon as this storm blows over! It's getting kind of nutty here right now!(Nuttier than usual, anyway lol) I emailed you yesterday evening, shoot me an email when you have a minute!

If I could get my hands on some of those vacuums I could save my apartment, I might actually get a head on my bills or pay them off!

Is there anyway I could somehow get ahold of any of these vacuums? That way I could save myself.
