I really want (notice I said want, not need) a new miele with the SEB 236 power nozzle. Now I just need a little extra push one way or the other....

So lets hear it....good and bad. The only real 'need' is because of the superior filtration and my awful allergies.

Thanks,
Jason

Miele Canister

I had a Red Velvet and a Blue Moon and I really liked them both! I bought the Red Velvet brand new from my local vac shop and it was a stellar preformer. I only got rid of the 2 vacs because I installed a Vacuflo because we had a large german shepard and i was sick of smelling "dog" when I vacuumed. The Red Velvet had the 236 PN and it is by far one of the best power nozzles on the market. The 236 has an awesome headlight, and it really grooms the carpet nicely. I wish I could use a 236 nozzle for my central vac, it would be an amazing combination. I had the older style TOL PN on the Blue Moon with the metal base plate and metal roller and it too was great. My only gripe at the time was that the bags and HEPA filter are rather pricey and with a large dog at the time and a cat, we did go through bags quickly. However you could really pack the bag full and not notice much of a change in power. My other issue if Im remembering correctly, the dust brush had nylon bristles, which can scratch furniture, not natural bristles like most other high end vacs. The dusting brush was also pretty small.

If I were in the market for another canister, I would buy the Miele Capricorn without any hesitation. The Capricorn has all the features my Red Velvet had, speed controls on the hose etc., and its silver color scheme with black wands and PN is very attractive. Im sure the models in that range that dont have all the features of the TOL would be fine, but after having both TOL machines, Id want another one again. And even though they are plastic machines, Im sure they will last a very long time with proper care.

Good Luck!

I owned a Capricorn for a couple of years and although it is a good machine, it did have its inferiority's. It was quiet, had great filtration, great floor tool, telescopic wand but what I didn't like was the short hose, the controls on handle were radio controlled I believe and consequently sometimes other appliances would cause interference and the vacuum would shut off for no reason, the headlight on the power nozzle became temperamental (which I heard from a sales rep was a design problem, and it was supposed to be rectified by going to an LED instead of fluorescent bulb), and it was hard to maneuver on carpet because the wheels were too small although it was great that all 4 swiveled. Just my opinion.

I love my Capricorn, but have the same issue with the hose length. SEB 236 nozzle is great on most of my carpets. I have to be careful though. I have a lot of Kilim rugs that are delicate and straight suction alone won't do the trick. The brush roll is quite aggressive. As for the bags, The Intensive Clean bags have been replaced by the Hy Clean type. This new design has these "straps" inside the bag that are fused to both the top and bottom inside wall. I'd love to know what else these "straps" are supposed to do besides catch all the dog hair and compact it into a ball directly in front of the opening, where it sets off the full bag indicator and makes the bag useless before it is completely full. It's beginning to be quite wasteful. If these bags are what I must resort to using, I think I'll be selling my Capricorn.

'I'd love to know what else these "straps"

The 'straps' are airflow-guides. They're designed to direct the incoming debris (moving at anything up to 70mph) into the corners and edges of the bag so it fills evenly, and makes good use of its full capacity. Sorry to hear they're not working well for you!

If you jump to about 1min 14secs in my video, you can hear one of the Miele reps talking about the design of the Hyclean bag. Sorry if the dialogue is a little hard to follow at times - there was background noise, and obviously I wasn't accompanied by a soundman! I have captioned all the essential points...

I've had the same problem with the HyClean bags. They didn't seem to open properly inside the machine. Fortunately, they seem to have been redesigned now and open up fully like the old style bags did.

Miele, there is no substitude

I would go for a miele any time. Still think it is the best household cleaner made.

I totally agree with Edgar, some people might not like them, but I love them.

Regarding the tweaked SEB-236, it's true, it now has LED lights instead of the fluorescent bulb with the ballast. When I was using the display Capricorn while visiting at my friends vac shop, the SEB-236 seemed a lot lighter compared to the older one I had used months before with the fluorescent bulb.

Second only to my Sebo Felix ...

... my Miele Red Star S312i with SEB 213-2 Powerbrush is by far and away the BEST modern vacuum I own! The filtration is excellent, the noise level minimal -- you simply can't beat a Miele.

Great BUT!!!

Some replacement parts are astronomically priced!!Im not an upright person, but the new Miele uprights are beautiful, well designed cleaners as well as all the canisters.
