Hi all,

Some of you may know me from AW.org. I am interested in collecting a small number of Hoover's for the wash house and I wouldn't mind a Hoover Constellation but I can't find one here in Ireland so Ebay seems good but how much would the postage cost? Also the wash house has a traditional un-surfaced wooden floor would it operate on that?

From what I've heard about constellations, they will work on hard floors, but that also have the problem of blowing dirt around because of the "hovercraft" effect (watch any vid of a hovercraft running on the ground or water and you can see how much debris is blown around), so really it's not that suitable for use in say a kitchen or wash house...

It's not a dirty floor really, just some dust over time. I thought the air would rush through the gaps in the floor? I don't intend on using it daily or anything, it's more of a vintage showpiece with a purpose.

What kinds of Constellations are there? I don't really know the history.

Unless the gaps in the floor are as big as the exhaust, I don't think there'd be any problems getting it to float...

The only constellation types I know of are the originals and the modern ones (sold here in the UK and Europe as the Maytag Satellite), I'm not up to much when it comes to Hoovers, I only have three (Juniors, 1334, 1334-lookalike (relatively modern rebuild) and 1346), so I don't know a lot about them...

Constellations

The history of Constellation is fairly straight forward. They have always had the same shape, but the first model (822) had the hose going in the top and did not float. This was shortly upgraded to the 822A - same shape but this one did float. Around 1959 (UK timeline) the styling was changed to have a side mounted hose - the first of these was pink and white. It continued more or less unchanged until until 1981 or so, with just changes in colour and in the carpet/foor nozzle.

The length of production means that they crop up fairly often on ebay - sometimes well priced and sometimes not. At least in NI Hoover cleaners were widley marketed and the Constellation was popular, so you should have little trouble in finding one, with a little patience.

Well its not a bad price and I have seen others in worse condition for more. Its a late model too - there was a "mint" (as in very good condition) one of these on ebay very recently, I think it started at £50.

Be warned though before bidding - check with the seller that he will actually ship it to Ireland and what he will want to charge - although I believe the seller knows his cleaners and honestly represents their true condition, he has a bit of a reputation of being difficult - I have no personal experience of that (he has bought from me, and I think I have from him) but others have mentioned it ....

But I think I would bide my time, there are plenty of them around and I would be amazed if you could not find one locally in the classified ads, auctions, junk shops or even ebay or do you have an equivalent of Freecycle? Like I said, just be patient

I think I'll try Freecycle first as my new prepay credit card does suck my savings dry and I'm better saving for a rainy day. I think the Harlequin is a nice cleaner, can you tell me a bit about those?
