New Electrolux UltraSilencer Green EL6984A - Highly Rated!

It has always annoyed me that Consumer Reports stopped testing air-only, non-power-nozzle canisters in a separate category a long time ago. The testing teams seemed to think that carpet-cleaning ability should be the highest factor in determining the ranking of a canister. So I was rarely able to get a sense of which canister would be good as a companion to a good carpet cleaning upright.

But every so often, CR throws in an air-only canister vac into the mix of models they test. That's how I was able to trust my purchase of the new Hoover Constellation (it rated high on everything but carpet cleaning).

Well, I just checked the website, and we have a winner! They have highly rated the new Electrolux UltraSilencer Green EL6984A air-only canister. The model received an Excellent mark for bare floor cleaning, noise level, pet hair removal and emissions control. The most important rating to me is for Airflow from the Hose for Tool Use - and this rated a Very Good, which is rare for any of the canisters tested by Consumer Reports. And believe it or not, it seems to have rated a "Good" for carpet cleaning, which means it might even be useful on light throw rugs - and this is not even with a turbo nozzle for carpets, just a regular carpet nozzle.

The cool thing is: it's partly made of recyclable materials....which is a nice side benefit if you are into the "environmental thing..."

I definitely would not use a vacuum to clean up cheese! YUCK! Can you imagine what will happen to carpets after the carpet nozzle gets all gooey with cheese?

As my cousin would say in Yiddish: "Nisht tzu klug..." ("not very smart...")

Gosh what a great looking vac!

I am sorely tempted to seek on of the UK ones out, hopefully they will be a popular choice especially being more energy efficient and advertised as such.

Not that 'eco friendly' in the grand scheme of things considering that a 450W Upright Hoover can outclean anything on carpet out of what is made these days its a step in the right direction to reducing uneccessary energy usage where barefloors are concerned.
Such low levels of energy usage (450w) are certainly all that is required for carpet cleaning alone from an upright but I guess something a little more powerful is required should you need your cannister to clean carpets in a mixed floor home too.

Interesting how it also got good CR ratings, what other cannisters was it up against? did it clean as well as these or was there a difference?

In the UK 1000 - 800 watts is marketed as Enviro friendly with electrolux and morphy richards selling upright cleaners using this amount of energy.

I have yet to see apart from this Lux any cannister style cleaners sold as this but Miele do have economy/energy save positions on their cleaners for everyday cleaning which are around 1000/1100 watts and these wattages certainly do sterling jobs even on non everyday cleaning tasks.

Looked like the little girl in the video clip was having a HARD time picking up the grated cheese with that "combo" floor tool-HATE those.A standard brush bare floor tool would be better-and EASIER on that nice wood floor.Like that the vacuum uses a bag-but at the same time looks like another "Plastivac"that instead of being recycled-will end up at the landfill when it dies.Keep an eye out on your curbs at trash day-you might find one of those that way.I think another tool would be more"green" in picking up the grated cheese-how bout a---BROOM?I am not really impressed with Electrolux-Eureka canisters these days.Too many failures with them-motors esp.Were frequent visitors to the vacuum repair places here.Oh yes it also appears that little girl wanted to play with the machines cord reel!

Hi Robert....

You asked about the other canisters tested by Consumer Reports along with the Ultra Silencer by Electrolux. Well, there are about 8 other canisters that rated better than this model, primarily because they all have power nozzles which clean carpets better than suction-only machines. This Ultra Silencer was the best of the suction-only machines. Of all the more highly rated canisters, there were only 4 which had ratings for "tool airflow" equal or better than the Ultra Silencer: the top-rated Kenmore Intuition with power nozzle (excellent tool airflow), the Electrolux Classic Oxygen with pn (very good tool airflow), the Miele S2180 Tital with pn (excellent tool airflow), the new bagged Hoover Windtunnel S3670 with pn (very good tool airflow but only "fair" in "handling").

Most canisters tested by Consumer Reports got an excellent rating for "Bare Floor Cleaning".

Except for the new Made in China budget line Miele Titan, all these other canisters that have great airflow through the hose for tool use, also have those bulky "gas-pump" handles that make vacuuming with attachments problematic and tiresome. None of them are as quiet as the Silencer. And because they all come with power nozzles, these other vacs are more expensive than the Ultra Silencer. The Ultra Silencer has a price tag of about USD265, and so when paired with a high-performing Hoover Tempo upright at USD99, you have an excellent and easy-to-use vacuum team, in my opinion.
