That's model 980, actually. BTW, what is the serial #, if you claim it to be a '73 model? The first set of numbers in the serial # should start with "37" for 1973. Example: 37F-D-32959 (37F = June 1973).

This is actually a pre-1971 model because of the serial #; thus, I'm led to believe this may be from 1967 or 1968.
The non-removable nozzle version that shares its model # became the 890 within Electro-Hygiene circles by 1969, and around 1973 proper became the 903, which continued into 1983-87 under the Royal name when E-H was shutdown.
In 1971, the 880 with the removable nozzle became the 980, while the mainstream Royal version was called the 888.
What was the purpose of the removable head? From the pictures, you had to have the head attached in order to use the converter to hook up the hose so it wasn't to make it easier. Makes no sense to me.

a coupler that allowed the attachment of the hose without the nozzle. The older Royals and E/H had a portable handle with its own cord and a smaller bag available. The hose couple was a carryover from the days of the straight suction machines when the hose was attached without the nozzle.
Kirby had a patent on the belt lifter. Royal tried copying it on a model called the Galaxy 990. Kirby threatened a lawsuit and Royal stopped making that machine. Royal did not have deep enough pockets to even attempt taking on Kirby. This was in 1976 when I saw the 990 for sale in the vac shop where I worked at the time.
The aforementioned coupler required the use of a screwdriver. It was not a complicated or difficult transition, just not perceived as worth doing by the customer. Most did not buy the portable conversion kit anyway.
