Hey There,
Have you looked into the Dirt Devil Featherlites? Dirtdevils are good cleaners, but they are loud and the brushroll will probably need changed once a year. I was impressed with the ones I have used. Sadly, I have not yet been able to use a Hoover Platinum or an Oreck so I can't say how they perform. I know that when I tested a Riccar Supralite I was not overly impressed, especially for it's price tag. It didn't really clean any better than any of the other vacuums I looked at. I don't think the Dirt Devil should be over a hundred dollars or so. Sanitaire's are good too! I still have one from 1996 and it still runs well. Although, the bag had to be replaced and it's needed a new fan and brushroll, but it's still worth it, I'd say. If your grandmother is gentle and careful about what she vacuums, it should be a good choice too.

Piano_god, thanks for pointing out the link between Samsung and Bissell.... I remembered hearing years ago that Bissells DigiPower canister was a Samsung, and it was obvious after seeing the Samsung version. I didn't know their other machines were also made by Samsung. I wonder which ones are and which ones aren't!

mb_1981, I'd completely forgotten about the Eureka 1934A! What a good suggestion. I think it would perfectly fit the needs in this situation. Powerful, light weight, super easy to push, and reliable. I don't think Orecks are that easy to push even though they are light.... the wheels are too small I think... the Hoover Platinum is easy to push though. The only thing she may not like about the 1934A is the super short cord, and lack of quick release cord wrap. I smile for hours every time I use mine... it is the only Eureka I use regularly, and I sing its praises every time. The bags may not be quite as easy to change as they are on an Oreck or Riccar or Hoover Platinum, but she's probably had similar vacuums all her life and is familiar with the F and G set up.

I would highly reccomend a Simpicity Freedom.. Powerful but lightweight.. Of course an Oreck XL21 is good too more powerful then older orecks and quiter too!

After having the Hoover Platinum Lightweight, I would really recommend it. The suction is great, and it has pretty good filtration. If it is used on low pile carpets, it will do GREAT.

Go with the Eureka 1934A

Go with the Eureka 1934A it’s a great vacuum cleaner. I just got a used one from Ebay and I have really enjoyed it. The only complaint that I have is the handle is plastic. However, if it does break a metal handle from a Sanitaire may fit. Any vacuum cleaner shop or janitorial supply should have these handles in stock, since the Sanitaires are so common. Attachments can be purchased for above the floor cleaning. The vacuum, attachments, extra bags and belts can be bought on Amazon.

The cord is also pretty short so you will need to use an extension cord. If you are skilled with wiring you could wire in a new cord for the vacuum. Right out of the box the vacuum will be fine, you can always add a metal handle and a longer cord later.

I think the brush roll in the vacuum is okay. It is one of the last modern vacuums to have beater bars and they really make a difference.
