Need Hoover Help

I have a Concept I U3101 that I got from my grandmother. I have torn it down and refurbished it. I replaced the motor bearings and carbon brushes. I replaced the beater bar brushes and bearings. I used all genuine hoover parts and the machine runs like new.

Now for my problem...the power drive belt keeps slipping off. When I tore it down, I did not do anything to the drive transmision, it works just fine when the belt is on. If I put the belt on I can vacuum for a long time, like 30-40 minutes. When I am done, and turn off the machine and let it sit a minute, I hear a soft "pop" noise and then check, and the belt has slipped of the transmission drive. I am using genuine hoover belts and they are on with the writing facing out and going the correct direction.

I'm certain this must be somehow wear related. My grandmother used this vacuum for many years without trouble. Is there anything I can try other than a whole new transmission, which i do not want to do, too expensive.

I enjoy using this vacuum, thinking about grandma when I am, and, of all the machines I have, it definitly does the best job at grooming my impossible to vacuum carpet.

Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

BUT the tranny is not lined up properly between the two brackets.
Try this: remove the hood and agitator housing from the cleaner.
now, with the front of the cleaner facing you and the p/d pulley on your right, loosen the two tranny mount screws by the belt pulley(do not remove them) then while pulling the belt pulley side towards you tighten the mount screws.
before totally reassembling the cleaner put a belt on and see where it rides.
The U3101 should have an all metal tranny. Note the screw holes on the mounting bracket, one is kinda slotted, which could allow the tranny to not be "square" in its brackets.
This should solve the problem

Or...

Try reversing the belt.

Not flipping inside out, but turning it around. If the letters on the belt are facing inward, turn it so they face outward.

If Jeff's suggestion doesn't solve the problem, and the belt thing doesn't solve the problem, your armature may be bent.

Oh,

The thread I was thinking about was about the belt walking off of the armature and flipping itself over... Not falling off.

But, here's the tread anyways.

Also, I'd be doubtful that it is the transmission that's the problem... Like I said, it would more likely be the armature.

Those Concepts are out there... they sold a TON of them. If you need one as a parts machine, it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Thanks hoover1060. I just finished up. none of the holes on the braket were really slotted, but the ones on the right were slightly bigger than the screws giving them some play. without the hood on, the belt runs just to the right of center on the trans pulley. No matter what I did, I could not get it more centered. I let it run for a while and it seemed steady, there were no signs of it slipping off. So, I'll give it a try.

The only other thing i can think of is that the motor shaft is somehow not quite square to the pulley. I believe I have all the plastic rings in the correct places that go around and hold the motor housing closed and then the outter one that goes between the trans bracket and the agitator housing bracket. Is there any other way to shim or otherwise change the position of the motor output shaft?

Going to go vacuum a few rooms and see what happens.

Hey...

The slotted holes on the right side are what Jeff was talking about.

The shims really only go on one way--the larger ones first, then the transmission and handle release ass'y, then the smaller plastic rings, then the agitator housing.

I don't think that the belt is supposed to ride completely center on the powerdrive pulley. It may ride just a tidbit one way or the other.
