need a few opinions

Hello vacuumland. Recently some modern machines other than Dyson caught my eye. Very unusual for me so what's your opinion on the shark navigator looks very Sleek light weight. Reminds me of a oreck XL with a canaster. But is it all its cracked up to be as far as power and versatility? Also I saw a Hoover carpet washer. Does it clean carpets as well as some or most? I know nothing will compare to a commercial extractor or truck mount but as far as conventional carpet cleaner/ shampooer is it a good buy?

Buy A Direct Air

You still have the opportunity to buy a "non-modern" machine that performs better, lasts longer, is easier and cheaper to service and costs less! You could get a Sanitaire SC888J for about $250.00. I can vouch for its durability. Or, for less than $150.00 shipped (credit stricklybojack for this find), a Hoover CH50020, which I'm not familiar with, but seems nearly as solid. If you can live without a headlight, your options are many more.

They sell Shark at Walmart. Repair shops can get bags and belts for a Shark and that's about it. If something goes wrong you have to send it back to Shark or just throw it out and buy another. I don't even know if Shark repairs them or they just send you a refurbished one.

I agree with Ornery. I would not buy a Shark Navigator. It is a bag less "bypass air" cleaner and will not clean your carpet nearly as well as the " direct air" Sanitaire he recommends above. Although the Direct air machines use a bag, they produce more airflow than bag less machines and will clean your carpet much better. The bag is large and will not need to be changed often. The Sanitaire has a much better brushroll which will beat and agitate the dirt up from your carpet much better than Shark's.


 


The Shark is made of plastic and has a cheaply made motor (will burn out) which means you will most likely need to buy a new vacuum in 2-3 years. The Sanitaire is made of metal and has a high quality motor. A vacuum like this will last 2-3 decades. So, even though you may pay more for the Sanitaire, you will actually save money by not needing to replace it every 2-3 years.


 


Some other quality Direct air vacuums include the Royal metal upright and the Kirby. Both of these vacs offer easier bag change than Sanitaire but are considerably more expensive. However you can find some of these on ebay that are used, but still in excellent condition with many more years of reliable use left in them. Checkout the link below.

I would buy it now if I had room in my apartment for it. I currently have 2 Kirbys and a Hoover Windtunnel. Unfortunately no room for a 4th vac.

Don't buy a Shark.


 


My sister bought the Shark Professional Navigator and it is a piece of crap! The sounds it makes when you push the floor nozzle down make me fear for the plastic.


 


My sister bought it a year ago and I've already repaired it twice.


 


Like mentioned above, get a Sanitaire cleaner. I've given many of those away and they're all still going strong.

But, SO many are raving about

"Shark". Don't look for one in MY home, but, do I bash? I could, but won't. They're like a lot of "new" vacs: they're fine BRAND NEW. But, after a while........................ not that I ever ran one.And, as George BushI (Daddy Bush) said, "Not gonna do it".
