So, this morning the doorbell rang, and there stood one of our neighbors. He said he had two vacuums that needed fixing. He said one (I'm assuming the Hoover) kicked the pieces out, and the other one (prob the Bissell) made a weird noise. So I lugged them out of his car and brought them in. First observation: they're NASTY! Both smell like dog crap. So, time to clean them up. Here are some photos of the progress and 'after' photos will be coming soon.

I've read about a few people washing off those Hoover cartridge filters. If you do wash it then be sure to let it dry VERY thoroughly before putting it back in the cleaner.

Thank you for the tip, Myles!

Unfortunately the machine sounds a bit off, maybe needs a new brush roll.

The Bissell just had a little clog that was easily fixed.

You're welcome!

What does it sound like? Try cleaning the brush roll before buying a new one, as that can help with brush roll sounds.

My Dirt Devil Handi-Vac sounded odd so I took it apart and the problem was that hair had gotten wrapped around the motor shaft behind the fan and it had made its way into the motor compartment itself. I cleaned that out and dusted the whole motor off and it is much quieter now. I'm pretty sure that Hoover uses a bypass system but it shouldn't hurt to clean out the motor compartment anyways.

Nice vacs.

Those machines actually are fairly good with performance. I've refurbished and resold a few of each kind over the years.

That Hoover Bagless, which I believe is model number: U5280-940 would have the 7.3Amp motor. Hoover did switch the 12Amp motor at some point but as best I can make out decals, I'd say yours is still the nice energy efficient model.

That Hoover is a Direct Air- fan first system, not a clean air design. You need to check the fan chamber on motor and make sure all blades are intact. The brush rolls on these are awesome because they are completely serviceable. Unless those bristles are worn or anything is melted, then everything is fixable. Bearings can be cleaned, greased or replaced if real bad. Remove all hair on bristles and under end caps. If end caps show any melting- they can be replaced. Upon reassembly ensure that metal washer on each end is installed correctly, brush roll should rotate smoothly, quiet and fast. If not recheck everything again. You're better off trying to keep the genuine style plastic/ with nylon bristle agitator than ruining this vac with a wooden CWP yellow bristled vacuum. There is a HUGE HUGE cleaning difference in using the yellow bristled CWP brush rolls compared to original style Hoover ones.

Hoover would not recommend washing that filter, but myself along with some others have done it. Just be careful and don't soak any longer for 30 minutes if even that long. You'd be amazed what 10 minutes in bleach will do!! I hate bleach but for those filters, it works awesome.

Those Bissells are fairly basic to work on. Clean air designs, 12 Amp motors. I recommend washing hose. If you do wash the hose hang it dry for about 36 hours to ensure its completely dry before re-installation. Hardest part about those Bissells in my mind is the housing behind the dirt cup as there are tons of miniature compartments that collect all sorts of dust and junk.

Best of luck and keep us informed of any questions, concerns and updates!!!

You're right!

The Bagless is a U5280. I completely tore it down and scrubbed every plastic piece clean. All the impeller blades are there and the fan chamber is intact. You said it has a 7.3A motor, but on the motor tag it says 6.9A, maybe just an approximation?

Oh, I never knew those Hoovers were direct fan type. I would have been able to tell if I had looked closer at where the hose is... I probably should have double checked what type of motor it has before saying that it is probably clean air type.

That Hoover brushroll doesn't look too bad. Those nicks are probably from repeatedly picking up small sharp objects like stones, or other stuff like that. I've never had to replace one of those brushrolls unless the brushes were completely worn down or the bearings were melted. Grease em up and they work like new everytime!

Man Oh my, the way that brush roll looks all gnarled up, maybe it hit rocks in that mummified dog crap! I guess you can really say the crap hit fan on this one, guys! LOL
