Its actually noticeably better than a rear conversion Senior/Convertible despite the far lower wattage. The reason being the converter is pretty much airtight against the fan when fitted (In the same way as on a 115/Lark etc)

To me, that looks like a replacement for the old 28/61 style machines. Or maybe model 64.

Wow! Thanks for posting all of those pictures, and all of the information! I am loving this machine! And wishing I had paid more attention to them long ago... I think I may have another junior stuffed in a box, from 2 moves ago. I think it may be a brown one. It was given to me right before I moved -- in a box it went.. and it's not seen the light of day since. I'll now have to dig it out! I don't remember if it's brown or green... I seem to remember that it's missing its bumper. Hmmm

Ben: The Concept 1 is in it; all 4 models... the Only Portapower is the white one with the red and blue stripes. Celebrities, portables, polishers and quick brooms are in the brochure, too.

Kyle: I just soaked this bumper in Simple Green and HOT water for a while, then used a 3M Scrubby pad. Usually I use rubbing alcohol on a sponge or rag (if the bumper doesn't come off).

Why.....

was the junior always manufactured in England? I know they sold well over the water, but curious as to why Ohio didn't assemble them as opposed to being shipped over here. Anybody know or have a guess?

The 115 and 12/14 were as far as I know made In NC.

The 1330 was built at Perivale and exported as a complete unit.

The models 1340, 1348 and U1025 were a joint effort so to speak- we made the base/motor unit and the handle/bag assemblies are American and were added at NC once they arrived there. If you compare a US and UK model the bags and handles are totally different.

The reason that springs to mind is that the limited demand for Junior/Lightweight models over there would make the tooling/moulds etc to make the main unit too expensive to justify NC having a set, plus obviously a seperate production line(or at least part of one) would be needed.

Just an idea??

I have been told that they were all built in the UK, although Jack has confirmed they were all designed in NC. In believe that the US had the 115 some months before we had the 119 here, but then, given the need for exports at that time, that is hardly surprising.

And I think you are spot on with the production aspects. Indeed I have often suspected that was why we had the 612 from 1950 till 1955 when the US 62 was on sale from about 1950(?) that the old moulds and tooling were shipped here from the USA - but that is just my idea

Bit more info...

The early style hose (like yours, Fred) can use either the early adapter or the later type - the later hose with the plastic tube uses a bayonet fitting so the early type adapter isn't compatible (no slots for the lugs on the connector). I've got a spare early adapter, let me know if you want it!

The early type of hose with the metal tube and push-button coupler was designed so the cleaner could be used as a blower - the bag fill tube, on European machines at least, has a small rectangular slot that lets one attach the hose after the paper bag has been removed. Later hoses also fit the fill tube, but won't fasten into place.

The design was superseded in April 1968 by the bayonet type, the hoses for the 652 and 419 cylinder were also simplified at the same time.

Alistair - after I saw the picture of my old machines I ended up dreaming I still had the Challenge! I'm down to four Juniors from 16, but at least they're at home and not deteriorating in storage, like too many of my machines were...

Serial numbers.....

You are quite right- it always strikes me as strange because all the NC built/UK spec machines I have (2106 Portable,858 Connie,U4003 Convertible,U4147 Convertible and U6033 Powerdrive) have the serial # in the standard UK format. Maybe it was something Perivale specified as necessary???

Hoover Oovas!!!

Great find there Fred, and a lovely shade of green, quite different from the colour range here!! heres a line up of Hoover Junior UK models that we put together at Al`s home in London, to celebrate 100yrs of Hoover, following us all meeting in North Canton for the official 100th birthday...wow two yrs ago...(Al ..am sorting the photos as we speak to show them!!!)

Theres only one change in the line up!!! and we do know how that got there!!! dont we Jack..Lol
