My poor Dyson DC24

Hi all,

It's been a while since I posted in here. Hope everyone is looking forward to Christmas!

Today I decided to empty out the bin and wash the filters on my Dyson DC24 which I've had for 4 years now. I admit I do not keep up with the filter washes as I should and especially as I've had to move out of my home and into a shared flat etc etc. My DC24 has started it's awful rattling brushbar syndrome which is awful because it makes the machine twice as loud and it's quite unsettling. I took the brush out and ran it and the noise went, so I know it needs a new brush and end cap (this one only lasted a year) I have a spare one somewhere.

Anyway, I went to wash the filters and opened the lid of the cyclone pack and saw the inlet into the machine was coated with fine dust, the actual filter itself somehow lifted up inside the housing which allowed dust to escape straight onto the HEPA filter! When I took the HEPA filter out to wash it, it was coated in thick dust and the odd chunk here and there. I have washed both the filters now and awaiting them to dry. I noticed the housing inside the ball is totally covered in fine talcum powder like dust so I've wiped it out as much as I can. It's a shame to think I could have seriously done some damage to my machine it i didn't wash out the filter. This is why maintenance is so important - my machine has been spewing out fine dust into the air because I didn't look after it properly!!

I also just wanted to enquire if anyone has ever heard of a Dyson filter 'twisting itself' inside of the machine and then allowing dust into the machine. I think in the case of my machine, the filter was so badly clogged with very fine dust, the suction simply pulled one side upwards which I never imagine could happen.

I suspect the flat I moved into most probably wasn't vacuumed for a very long time or there were smokers in there before, as I remember the bin filled up so much the first time I used it. The filter area at the top has extremely fine builders like dust residue which seems to indicate the Dyson has removed a lot of fine dust from within the grotty carpet In the apartment.

This makes one wonder...

If perhaps this might not have happened if you had been using a bagged upright such a Miele or other bypass bagged machine.

Nice to see you back gere

Looks like the Dc04 would come in handy with a new motor maybe as it requires 6 monthly washes, and the plastic filter cannot lift up like rubber as its not very flexible
Plus the DC24 filter acts as a seal aswell unlike the DC04, so the DC24 filter has 2 functions instead of one.

It may help if the bin gets emptied when it reaches the max line too

That same thing has happened to my dc24 while I was clearing up some carpet cleaning powder. I would not worry about it too much, mine is still fine.


I remember reading the original thread when you first got yours, come to think of it my dc24 is the same age as yours. On Christmas it will turn 4.

Hi Parwaz,

Thank you for our response. I would have gotten the DC04 repaired but I am no longer living at the house now and have had to go into a flat share and I find that the DC24 is perfect because I store it in the small wardrobe and the flat isn't massive. My warranty will expire December 2014 so its best to make use of it for the time being. I think the DC04 is being stored in the shed.

Also thank you for your response. Your DC24 is exactly the same age as mine, I got mine at the beginning of Dec in 2009. I hope it's been great for you! I do very much like its compact shape.

It's not been the best for reliability as the handle has broken twice, hose has split and the brush head motor burnt out after 3 years. Got my second brush head and its started to rattle again but this time its not the motor cog that's making this noise luckily so it just needs a new brush and end cap. The main suction motor in the ball is of good quality and durable enough to withstand the dust that went into it, but I will ensure I wash the filter every month of so as I'm supposed to.

Any Vacuum will suffer if it is not maintained. The amount of Miele's and Sebo's I see in my shop with Burst bags is horrific. Having a bagged vacuum does not mean you can abuse it. The bags get so heavy the pop off. At least with a dyson you can see when its full and empty it.
