Before getting my Dyson DC24, I used a DC04 for 7 years. I was very happy with this machine as it provided very good suction and cleaning performance, it was fine mechanically, only the plastic parts would let it down as the odd part would break every couple of months or years etc. When I first purchased the DC04, the clutch was noisy when the brush was rotating, it wasn't the ratchet, it was just the rotation was noisy when the brush was spinning so Dyson came and changed this. The clutch was fine for 7 years.
The machine has DC07 BRUSHCONTROL written on the cleaning head though, shows that Dyson quality control was not too great at the time when this machine was made as this was missed by the facory.
In the time I had this machine, the handle broke twice,I have had to change this. The latter one was made out of Polyproplene as opposed to ABS on the other ones, the Polyproplene was much better and didn't break.
The Stair Tool broke twice, again Dyson sent me a new Steel coloured tool in 2005, this felt different as made out of Polyproplene, this one didn't break and is still fine til this day. I think the hose pierced once, the latter hose was fine and again still is fine, Dyson must have changed to Polyurethane on this hose as they advertised.
The main duct of the machine cracked in 2008 where the handle goes into the machine so it renedered the machine uselesss, I had to buy a whole new duct spine and take the machine apart to put the switch, motor etc into the new housing, I could see though that this part has 2 cracked which appeared again in the same bit so when I used the machinbe on Lindo, I had to hold the back spine to help move the machine about.
The machine used to be quite good with filtration but the post motor filter appeared to have a poor seal as the machine used to leak a lot of carbon dust and this was evident by the black carbon dust on the bottom of the bin and the spine of the machine when taking the bin off.
The cyclone used to let a lot of hair through the system and hair used to be caught by the Pre Motor filter. I have had this with the DC05 and the DC16 root cyclone handheld also. No major issue, just scrape the hair off the filter when washing.
The machine stops making ratchet noise when it got jammed, I suppose as the belts began to loose their tension over the 7 years of use but the belts did not require changing from what I could feel though now when I use my DC24 I feel that the DC24 brushes better as the brush is motorised and there is no slippage as there must have been with the DC04 machine.
I switched this machine on recently and started vacuuming, it was fine for half a minute then it started making this awful noise and then smoke and horrible elctrical small started coming from the machine, that was the end of it
