My Newest Shark!

Hi Everybody,

I want to first say, Haters can hate.. but I’d prefer you do not post that my Shark belongs in the Trash can nor do I need anyone to give me their opinions that I’ve thrown money away on junk.

Let’s agree to disagree and this is just something fun I’m posting today to show my latest Shark vacuum. I was at Sam’s Club today for paper towels and other stuff and walked down my favorite aisle.. the vacuums. I saw this before and passed on it because I already have so many Sharks, I didn’t “need” it.. but this was different, the store had a $50 instant savings on it so I got the Shark NV835 Duo Clean Powered Lift Away XL for $179.98. So need was no.. want was OK get it!

I’ve only used it a little bit because today was a super busy day, but I will be using it more tomorrow and I’m going to clean the entire house with it today or tomorrow for sure.

It came with the motorized brushroll tool, the pet brush and the typical crevice/brush tool that looks very similar to Dyson’s tool. I also got the under appliance tool and a Dusting Brush free from the Shark representative in store. Very nice guys and even though they were there, I wasn’t influenced by them as much as wanted this model because of the $50 savings and I LOVE the colors!! Metallic Dark Blue and Dark Metallic Orange.. looks so good up close, in person. Plus my other XL doesn’t have the Duo Clean.

Anyhow, I hope you guys don’t mind me sharing and again, thanks for being nice and not bashing Shark. Just remember I LOVE ALL vacuums equally but that does NOT mean I think they all perform or clean equally... I just love collecting vacuums of ALL brands. I own Miele, Sebo, Tacony brands and now my new Kirby Sentria II.... so it’s all good and I Love equally!

I "petted" one of the newer Sharks similar to that model when at Walmart, I loved to feel the brush. I'd hate to use it for fear of dirtying up a pretty brushroll though! haha I like the "rims" on the wheels on that model too, looks similar to some certain tuner wheels.

It is nice they provide enough hose to actually be able to use the Lift away. My Hoover React the hose is so short, it is almost impossible to use the lift away function.

I looked at the Shark at Sam's recently as well. I do like the looks of them, and they appear to function well.

I will pass you back the fire extinguisher you loaned me on the Oreck thread in case the villagers light their torches.

I recently bought a Powered Lift Away and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by it. I'd only used my Rainbow E2 Blue for a month or so before buying the Shark, so I was surprised that I completely filled the container after cleaning the whole house. They're definitely great vacuums, and the lift away feature is perfect for cleaning out the cars. I'd never been a huge fan of Shark but I had never owned one before this, my only issues with it are that the filters get dirty quite fast and I know replacement parts are hard to come by.

Better than Dyson

I have always liked the Shark vacuums and I prefer Shark over the Dyson. Better value for the money. I have done a lot of comparisons between the same age Dyson DC40 and Shark NV500. Shark cleans A LOT better especially medium to high pile rugs.
I have the Miele C3, Sebo Felix, Sebo K1, Kirby G6 and many other better quality vacuums than Shark. However Shark performance is very good for what it is.

Here is the end result of the deep clean test with Shark NV340, Dyson DC40 and Sebo Felix.
How I did it, was I put down equal amount of coffee grounds to each vacuum. Then vacuuming one full pass with each vacuum. Finally I vacuumed each path (very thorough) with the Kirby G6 with the dirt meter and picture shows what each vacuum leaved behind.
Shark was almost good as the Sebo Felix + ET-30 ph.

I will concede that Sharks are better than Dysons. I know the one we had lasted a lot longer than the Dyson did, and it was half the price.

The latest Shark with Duo head you can now replace the brushroll which is a good improvement.

They are definitely better than some people say. The cyclone unit is quite poor though.

Two things...

1: How does that mini-turbo brush compare to the generic Hoover/Electrolux/Vax/Chinese 'Power-Paw' style?
Our Shark info-mercials videos show the machine in use with the former, but the latter head seems the one destined for our shores.

2: What is that 'Hitler moustache' brush doing near the rear wheels, in Photo #9?

Along with cleaning our house I also clean/look after my grandparents who have Alzheimer's and Dementia. Their heavily patterned carpet hides things well and I often get random objects rattling up the vacuum - god only knows where they come from. Small coins, hearing aid batteries, small screws and bolts are the most common items. You don't see them hidden in the carpets pattern so the first thing you know about it is when they're rattling up the machine. This has brought me to realise I NEED a bagless machine to be able to check it was just some random junk and not a piece of valuable jewellery.

My only two machines prior to the Shark purchase were Sebo Felix and Numatic Henry.

In the last year or so I've had Miele C3's, various new upright and cylinder Dyson's including the Cinetic and new upright Light Ball.

I bought the Shark NV801UK Powered Lift Away Duo Clean for £220 a few weeks ago and all I can say is Oh. My. Gawd.

This thing removes so much dirt and fine dust. I filled it to the brim 5 times on its first visit to my grandparents. I filled it once on its first go around our house too. I've no idea where its getting it all from, but its real dust and sand that its pulled up.

Seriously impressed with the cleaning performance of it. Easily picks up way more dirt than any Dyson I've ever had.

With it being the updated model for the new EU regulations it is also nice and quiet with soundproofing around the motor area.

My only real dislikes of the machine are the small width of the cleaning head and small dirt cup. However the small dirt cup is less of an issue now that I've cleaned multiple times with it so it is slower to fill as it isn't finding as much hidden dirt.

I've been washing the pre motor filter every week while I figure out how often it is actually going to NEED it, however I'm going to back this off to every two weeks as it looks filthy on the surface but when you remove it the inside of it is still quite clean. It deffo won't go the 3 months Shark say it will given how much use it will get. With it only being a foam ring with a felt pad underneath it only takes seconds to rinse and I've got a spare filter set too so there is no down time waiting for them to dry.

If they bring the larger version of this style machine to the UK in the way that America have the Apex I'l be upgrading to one.

Either way I'm really impressed with this machine and its performance, versatility and features.

I'll stick a proper review and video review up soon when I have some spare time

Question 1)

I really love Sharks (or any brands) Electric Motorized Mini Brushrolls and I HATE the air driven mini brushrolls. The Shark Electric Motorized Brushroll does an excellent job cleaning up after short hair dogs. I have a Chihuahua Corgi dog Kermit and the Shark gets every single dog hair off the furniture, even the upholstery that is woven and seems to grip and hold onto dog hair. It also is the best at cleaning car interiors. It’s powerful but quiet, the brushes are “just stiff enough” to deep clean, but gentle enough on softer upholstery. It spins at an ideal fast speed, sorry no idea the RPM’s? Sharks works great on stairs too. I’ve never had an instance where this small powerhouse didn’t brush up every dog hair. The Shark also has a very convenient flip open latch for cleaning anything that might stick to the brushes or loose threads that might wrap around it. Another very nice feature, the entire head of it Pivots to stay in touch with what you’re cleaning. As for Air driven brushrolls like Hoover, etc. I Never use them.. mainly as I can’t stand the high pitched shrill sounds they all make! I have an entire drawer of them from many brands, Hoover, Electrolux, Eureka and Kenmore that I never use. Plus you just lightly place them in contact with anything and immediately the brushroll Stops spinning! I have personal experience with Sebo and Miele Air driven mini brushrolls and they are Ok, but not half as effective as Electric heads. They will still slow down as you push them across furniture but don’t usually Stop. I feel they are built better and a lot quieter! The Miele full sized mini brushroll is great, but I’m Not a fan of their compact mini head.. it’s a pain to use as it’s literally two inches wide! Lol Now I cannot say how well the Shark, or any mini brushroll cleans up after Long haired dogs or those really fluffy cats. I only know my friend with a fluffy Husky type dog.. the Dyson Tangle Free Turbine is a must and from what I’m told is the only one that cleans long hairs (human too). Oh and come to think of it, the Kirby Zipp Brush (Air driven) works well and I’ve not experienced tangles yet.

Question 2)

The odd black brush in photo 9 is (from what Shark customer service representative Karen informed me) is to keep the entire brushroll head in contact with the floor and to reduce/eliminate the back of the Motorized Brushroll Head from Lifting Up on the pull backward motion. After she explained that, sure enough I got my similar, older Shark Rotator Powered Lift Away XL (NV755) out and tested her explanation.. YES it really does work! The DuoClean head Rear Wheels stayed in contact with the floor with no effort on every backward Pull motion. The forward motion makes this little black brush retract up into its recessed area. I found on the same thick carpeting.. the Back wheels on my older Shark would lift up off the carpet with almost every pull backward motion without slowing down and pushing down on the handle. The New DuoClean Shark, no matter how quickly you pulled backward, kept those back wheels down.

So it really does improve the Powerheads maintaining contact with the floor. It’s funny but just that little brush, pivoting out on every backward pull.. it pulled the back wheels down gently enough to keep them in constant contact with the floor.. but added NO noticeable resistance or effort to the pulling motion.
