I found a hoover 28 at a used/ resale store today- and for only $8! It runs, but sounds pretty rough. I cleaned it up fairly well, cleaned the cobwebs out of the motor and added a little oil to each bearing, although I think the lower bearing could use replacing, along with the carbon brushes, which are only about 1/2 inch long. The brush strips are fine along with thw brushroll bearings. The vacuum has been taken care of, because the top bearing has marked with pencil "9/88 c&l" which I assume means it was cleaned and lubricated in september of 1988. The fan had written on the backside "hoover 28 $1.95", the cord has been replaced, and the bag has been replaced. Are parts still available for it (lower bearing and carbon brushes)? that is basically all I need to have it running well. thanks!

Hoover 28

If they're still about a 1/2 inch, they shold be fine! The lower bearing probably needs to be cleaned, and repacked with grease.

It was one of Hoovers all-time biggest seller, partly because of the big post-WWII pent-up demand for unavailable vacuums. It's amazing, isn't it, that they are still showing up 60+ years later?

Congrats Justin!

That is a really nice looking machine, and thanks for asking about the availability of spare parts, my old model 26 is in desperate need of bearings and carbon brushes. I had wondered about that myself. Great post! Thanks!

It seems to be a decent cleaner and much more lightweight than i expected, now i just need to get it running good.

@hooverboy81 I have a hoover 28 that is using a model 305s' motor. I could use a lower sleeve bearing because mine often binds up and I know the motor is not bad. Can I also have some of that info of that source of parts?

thank you very much

Nice Find Dustin!

That's a beautiful 28, and great price too! I agree with John, the 28 is a must-have for all collectors, and also one of my favorite Hoovers.

I would love to have that model 26

But has anyone else tried the shipping calculator? It's estimating that it would cost almost $100 to ship it from Colorado to Kentucky! Yikes!
