I found this little guy while I was volunteering for a local charity/thrift store where I test the vacuums. Knowing the battery issues with these I didn't want to risk selling it. I decided to buy it myself since I had always been curious about these. Sure enough, it only runs for about 45 seconds (I put in a picture of the red light as it is running after a full charge). Right, time for a new battery. Anyways it works other than that, it's seal between the dust cup and cyclone assembly will need to be replaced soon, but it did clean up quite nice. It came with the charger and it's combo tool.

Who else has had a run in with one of these? How did it work for you?

I owned a DC16 Animal back in 2008-2010

It was great! I sold it to a friend (who has it mounted to her laundry room wall, and still uses it) and upgraded to the DC35 Digital Slim when it released. The suction of the DC16 was adequate, but at the time better than any cordless I had used. The kickass cyclonic filtration along the interchangeable tools made it a game changer. When I got mine, the battery still held a 6 minute charge, which was enough for cleaning the car, and cleaning fur off the furniture. Now the battery life on my DC59 Digital Slim is 5 times longer, and I've never had it die on me during a job. If you plan to keep it around, I highly recommend the Dyson Handheld Tool Kit, which comes with a stretch hose, and a really nice soft dusting brush. Really ups the versatility, and again is great for cleaning out the car.

I sold the DC35 to upgrade to the DC59, which in February Best Buy accidentally had marked new for $290.00. It had just launched in the US, and I liked the DC35 so much, I grabbed it without hesitation. It's an awesome vacuum, and indeed an upgrade in *almost* every way over the first two gen models. I was banging my head against the wall though, when 6 months later they launched the latest Motorhead model, with a much better powerhead. I checked it out at Target recently, and the DC59 Motorhead looks to have the best powerhead that Dyson has ever paired with a vacuum, ever. It's just like the cleaner head on the DC50, but with much stiffer nylon bristles.

I don't know what replacement batteries run for these, but if your initial investment was low, it could be worth it. Because of their grab-n-go nature, my cordless Dysons get more use around my place than any other cleaners. Yours looks like it's in excellent shape! Enjoy! Don't forget to wash both filters if they need it.

Found this pic online. I owned this cleaner in a time before magical camera phones.[this post was last edited: 10/10/2014-21:34]

Nice!
I would get two replacement batteries so you can use it for twice as long.
I would love a DC59 though, the Dyson fluffy looks cool too!

Henry Dreyfuss, I wish I had found one of the animal versions! Funny you mention the Dc59 motorhead, I found this dc16 this last thursday. And can you guess what I had decided to order Wednesday? (:

man114, Sadly I already ordered a genuine dyson replacement battery from ebay for very little. If it doesn't work out I will be sure to order one of the high capacity aftermarket batteries.

parwaz786, Thanks! I doubt I will need two batteries, especially with my other incoming dyson cordless. I wish that they sold the fluffy here too, I think it would be great for homes with lots of hard floors.

Let us know what you think of the DC59 Motorhead! I really like my DC59, but I'd like to see how the new one performs.

I will be sure to comment on my dc59 motorhead when it arrives. In the mean time, I have started getting rid of my other not as good cordless machines as the dc59 and dc16 will likely replace all of them.

I have one that I paid £3 for on eBay, same symptoms as you.

Cheaply eBay £20 battery and its great! It does have some suction, much better than any dust buster, we use it a lot for clearing up after our daughter, I've taken it into work, out to the shed etc.

Remember its a dust buster with only 8 minutes runtime and you'll love it! Cyclone assembly washes up very well too when you VAC up food and forget about it...

Anyone else who has a dc59 animal have problems with wand separating where it meets the plastic coupling? They sent me a new one no questions asked but I found this weird since I'm so careful with my machines. Sorry if this is off topic

This is the thing I give Dyson credit for, they make really good handheld vacuums. Sure the charge may not be the longest, but for what you pay for you get a pretty decent handheld. I have one at work at the desk where we triage incoming vacuums. Most of them come in full of dirt and debris and the Dyson is perfect for cleaning it all up.

Update

Beko, I saw the video of yours, and I agree that it is quite good for what it is.

daknx, I certainly think that dyson makes the best small cordless machines available as far as power and filtration.

As for my one, the battery came yesterday and after a short charge I ran around the house for the first time with it. I used various other dyson tools in addition with the standard combo tool. I cleaned several chairs/couches, some window treatments, counters, I even dusted several areas with it removing lots of dust and cat hair, then I took it into the laundry room to tackle the lint that builds up. I was very happy with it, great suction, good tools, and it felt very nice to hold and maneuver plus it had a very solid "power tool" feel. I admit that it could be quieter and I did run the battery down just as I was finishing. I will have to do an actual timing of it to see if it has the proper run time. I used it again today, doing a deeper clean of the living room couch and doing a quick spot clean of the car.

I think one of the best parts of this machine is the filtration. Not having to constantly clean it out to maintain power is very nice. On mine, the filter is literally spotless even after inhailing loads of lint, dust, and hair.

I can't wait to see how my dc59 motorhead compares, still waiting on that to show up (sigh).

I run mine without the blue foam filter for added powwah!

There is a fine film of dust on the motor housing, but nothing too sinister!

I wish I could find a tube and floortool to fit on the cheap, would do the laminate downstairs a treat!

Didn't get a crevice tool with mine, keep meaning to buy one...

Dc24 wand and a cheapo floor tool will work :) I know somebody with a dc16 who has tried a dc24 wand with a dc02 floor tool on it, fitted perfectly
Dc25 combo crevice tool will fit perfectly if you have one

beko, I found that the wand from my dc39 fits perfectly, clips on as well. It is the same wand that has been on several dyson canisters, I bet you could find a used one.

HIS welcome?
