Thanks for jogging my memory! My grandma's friend's Light and Easy did in fact have the butterfly logo on it but his was a mustard coloured base and white handle grip. I think the bag was light grey. It's times like these I wish I had a photographic memory!!!

My...

Hi, My grandma use to have a mostly dark brown Parry LnE. That have a butterfly logo on the front of the belt cover.
Just for ref here is a old pic with my red commander in it.

Oh WOW!!!

Lucky you! I really wish I had the space to collect. I just have to rely on my foggy memory and other peoples pics, of which I am very thankful for. I did have loads of brochures and catalogues from the 70's when I was a child but was made to give them up as I should've "grown out of this phase" according to my dad.

I would very much like to offer an opinion on how well both the Goblin Commander and Housemaid cleaners performed, except that I never used one from new and all the ones which came to my attention were very broken in every which way. I do remember the plastic of the Housemaid being very thin and fragile, whilst a lot of plastic on the Commander was chunky but rock hard and parts would often just be broken in two.

Ah........

and there is my mum's handheld Moulinex 250, I must say I totally agree with the Which? report on that, all round a pretty poor handheld, epecially compared to a Dustette.

Its confusing

as there is a printing error - the machine shown as the 250 is actually the Petitvac #1 and vice versa - i am not sure which bit of text goes with which. I have both but to my shame have never actually tried either. Maybe time for a hand vacuum thread :)

Hi

Hi Alistair, Thanks for posting the Which report on the Goblins.
I agree with you and find the Goblin Housemaids clean quite well. I'm not saying there the best vac that was out at the time but they clean fine. Esp with a NOS brush roller in it. Same for the Goblin Commanders. I would say the Commanders clean better than the Housemaids as they are more powerfuland have a different fan from the earlier Housemaids.

Hi Paul. It's a shame you got rid of your brochures etc. It would of been nice to of seen them. I bet you felt like slapping you dad for comments like you should've "grown out of this phase" My dad and quite a few other family memebers was never keen on my liking vacs.

I've never tried the Moulinex stick vacs. Generally stick vacs arn't my thing.

OMG I had forgotten the name "Parry." Ty for the memories. My gran's best friend had a Parry in black / dark blue and also a Light n Easy Spinney/butterfly beige model from Great Universal, as did most of their appliances if you bought the "exclusive" Great Universal branded stuff.

The one at my aunties would have been in the mid to late seventies and was the same design as the one in the picture at the start. Like Paul I had a load of brochures and a scrap book remember there two hotpoint light n easy colours the blue and green one and a yellow and cream bag one.

Has anyone uploaded any videos either of the housemaid or Hotpoint in use? Would also love to see the Hotpoint Swallow - never seen one in real life !

Borusa

I am sure Chestermike has a Hotpoint Swallow. Truly beautiful machines, I remember seeing one in person when I was little and was awe struck, although I was not allowed to touch it :-( .

I have not seen any video's of the Hotpoint or Housemaid's in use. I seem to remember the Hotpoint's were a bit on the noisy side but performed well, in fact I am sure that is why my Mum bought one as it got a favorable review in Which? along with the Hotpoint Supermatic twin tub she bought at the same time.

Excellent. Your hardbag and softbag Housemaids need to switch positions as the softbag you have there is older than the blue hardbag, possibly even from the 1980's. I know later models were equipped with a lower case font on the name Goblin.

Umm.

yes lol:o) I assume you ment the soft bag model in the picture is newer than the blue hard bag model but I wasn't lining them up strictly oldest to newest just the Housemaids were 1st and designed in the 70s followed by the Commanders designed in the 80s then Laser from the 90s. I believe the blue Housemaid was from around 1977/78ish and the brown Housemaid from around 1980/82ish. I think I have a scanned page of a catalogue somewhere of the Goblin housemaid and a Electrolux 502s and soft bagged philips upright. I do actully have a blue soft bagged housemaid as well but it's in poor shape.

Hello James, yes forgive me, because as you correctly deciphered, I did mean that the softbag Goblin cleaner was newer, not older, than the blue hardbag one which you own. Incidentally, though it's been a good deal of years since I worked on either a Commander or a Housemaid, I do remember that many parts of Commander cleaners were compatible with the Housemaid. Have you found this? The reason I mention it is because you may be able to refurbish an old Housemaid cleaner with some Commander parts, which I assume may be easier to locate.

Soooooooo jealous of that red Commander, if you could look up 1985 the dictionary it would have a picture of Grace Jones and a red Goblin Commander lol
