Hi, New member here, I have enjoyed the site for some time but since I didn’t own an old vac I didn’t really have a reason to join. But that changed the other day when I got this at a thrift store. I really liked the styling and it was really cheap. Since then I’ve come to like it even more after doing some research here and learning the history of it. I was aware of who Henry Dreyfuss was and I am thrilled to have this particular model. I could tell it has been serviced since it had that little sticker on it, but no date of service. Still, when I opened it up it really wasn’t very dusty inside.

Mini Restoration

Well, I own a few vintage appliances and frankly this one had a little too much “patina” so I was interested in getting it back to looking like it did in the 40s. So, here is a picture of the messy process I used anyway.

Very cool! One thing I've always wondered about that model: Is the hood made of Bakelite?

Paint Room

Here is another picture, it is just about ready to put back together. While I had it apart I did attempt to put a little lubrication in that lower bearing per another helpful thread on this site. Really helpful the archives and knowledge on the site.

Here is the finished product. Actually from the distance one normally is from a vacuum it basically does look like new. I had to replace that plastic window in the front too. It works great

Very Small collection

Here is a picture of a Regina Electric Broom I actually have had for quite some time. I use this in the kitchen and even some times in the work room. It really is handy for what it does. At the time I got it I determined that it was from 1959, and upon doing that research determined that I really liked this styling the best so I was most fortunate to pick this one up.

By any chance, would that refrigerator in the background be a G.E. Monitor Top? ;-)

excellent job! Can you talk a little about your painting process? It looks like you sanded. But what kind of primer and paint did you use? How did you apply it? Thanks!

As I was preparing this thread wouldn’t you know it put another one popped up at the thrift store. I actually passed on it and was driving away but had a change of heart and went back and got it. One of the reasons why was at this same store I once saw what I think was a early fifties Kenmore – it was black plastic or bakelite, it was an upright, and it looked a lot like a Hoover convertible, but I haven’t been able to see anything like it on this site or anywhere else. Anyway I am thinking that it might have been a rare bird and I regret not getting it. Does anyone out there know this machine? Anyway, for the price of a gallon of gas I figure I could grab this.

Yes, that is a monitor top, a 1927 GE.

I have an HVLP Sprayer that you see in the picture that puts down a very fine job. I had the local paint store here match the color to a quality oil enamel.

New Kirby

I guess I don’t have enough to do what with Christmas cards and shopping and work, but I went ahead and shined this one up in my spare time. BTW this thing was really hammered, it had some bad scratches, so I had to pour it on. I used to own a Premier 35 and had shined it up as well, plus my experience with my other old stuff. I’ve have leaned that this isn’t super old but it is a most practical vacuum and again works like a charm.

This picture isn’t staged, my little son loves moving this Kirby around. I wouldn’t say we can rely on him doing this chore though. Thanks for looking.

Which thrift shop(s) did you find them at? There's a Salvation Army in downtown Renton, and the Goodwill and St.Vincents in the Highlands, those are the only ones I know of around here.

G.E. Monitor Top

Love the fridge! It looks as though yours has the scuff guards to prevent the feet from scratching the floor. Does yours work? I'm trying to find a relay for mine. There was a gentleman named Mike Arnold who passed away about 3 years ago who seemed to be the only one who still had parts for these units.

Heads up...

There's a late 60's Kirby Dual Sanitronic 80 at the St.Vincents in the Renton Highlands, only $7. Looks good besides a brown Classic handle and broken zipper (I can get you a matching handle if you buy it). Was just up there, it was in one of the glassware rows.

I didn't buy it as I already have one, which I need to fix anyway.
