My Free Diamond G

Some of you may remember that a few days ago, I received several free Kirby vacuums that a Kirby Distributor received in trade. They all run and I was able to cobble together a very nice G5 from the bits and parts of the two he gave me. Today, this free Diamond G showed up on my doorstep, complete with an unused carpet shampooer, and attachments. As you can see, the Diamond G is in excellent condition! Most of the attachments appear to have never been used. If I'm reading the serial number correctly, this particular unit was made in 2004. But it looks like it was hardly ever used. Congratulations on your free Diamond Edition! I didnt pay retail for mine but it wasnt cheap either, but its worth every penny I paid for it and then some. I think the Diamonds bag and handle decal are much better looking than the Ultimate G and the 2 speed switch really is a nice feature for small area rugs. The switch makes it possible to clean them with the Kirby, which would otherwise be impossible due to the tremendous power of the vacuum. My Diamond Edition is one of my absolute favorite machines, I will never part with mine! I hope you get many years of dependable deep cleaning from your vac and it does a wonderful job on any type of carpeting. Congrats again! (Im very jealous you got it for free and to top it off its in nearly perfect condition, you have amazing luck)

Two Speed Switch

The Diamond Edition is the only Kirby to have this switch. Its a small clear toggle switch on the top of the unit close to the handle (towards the back of the machine). The switch remains clear when in normal opperation, but when selecting the low speed, the switch illuminates green. Its very convenient, and its a shame Kirby discontinued this afer the Diamond Edition.

A very useful feature. I use it every time I use my Diamond. Really makes a difference on area and throw rugs. I use it for mattress and furniture as well.

That speed switch on the Diamond Edition actually makes it a four speed, because you can select hi and lo in nozzle mode or hi and lo in hose mode! I used to have a Diamond Edition before I got this one, but I gave the other one to my Mom. Not long after I gave it to her, she had all the carpet in her house taken up and refinished the wood floors. She still has carpet in one room, but her vacuum looks its been through the demolition derby.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with this vacuum I was given. It had some scuffs on the Mini-Emtor but they came right off with a Scotch Brite pad. There aren't even any scratches on the nozzle. Just a little oxidation here and there.

I too echo the comments above. This is my favorite in the "G Series" of models.

I was disappointed when they took the delicate mode feature away as well.

for Bill, but IMHO, the time for high/low power switches has mostly come and gone.

Kirby's use on that one particular model may have been a test to see if it still had any use and that may be why the Sentria does not have it.

Filter Queen may be the last DTD sold vacuum that has it. I don't think Rainbow has it anymore. Hoover and Eureka had it as a selling point nearly a decade or more so ago.

I'm trying to think why a buyer would want it in our current market. Maybe throw rugs? Or to keep the drapes from going up the hose? Do people even vacuum their drapes or valances anymore other than us on this site?

I do like my 2 speed motors, so don't get me wrong! But, does the rest of the world appreciate them like we might?

I was curious to see how it works on low speed with car mats, so I tried it out on Sunday afternoon. It works very well!

Delicate & normal switch, Terry & Charlie...

Terry, I was informed by one of my 'sources' that there was confusion with the green light on the brushroll (BPI) & the green light of the delicate mode for the customers.


Think for just a moment, "how do you get confused by two (2) lights." When I get in any of my vehicles, at startup, there are many lights that light up [hopefully temporarily], both yellow & red. (I sure hope 'these people' who got confused, don't drive. ~~lol~~)


I think it was more pure laziness on PROPERLY teaching the sales staff by the distributors; which in turn resulted in IMPROPERLY teaching the customers. (imho)

I always showed it, taught it, & I use it regularly.


Charlie, some of the places that different people like its benefits are for more delicate items, such as lamp shades, mountings (ie: fish, deer, birds, etc.) especially if the taxidermist didn't do the best of job, trophies (ie: best monster vac, best restoration, most unique & rare AIR-WAY, etc.), or possibly even some plants especially with larger leaves.

Another benefit I've had customers appreciate is if someone is sleeping or has sensitive hearing, it is considerably quieter. (Huh, what did I say??? Oh wait, that would be hard of hearing. ~~lol~~) Keep in mind you don't want to use it in the delicate mode all the time, as you are sacrificing some cleaning ability.

I was reading the comment above that said that the era of the 2 speed mode has come and gone. And I do recall having a "high speed" button on the Decade 800 and other late 80s models. That one wasn't that beneficial.

AW.com often has commentaries on vintage blenders that have up to 20 speeds and the actual practicality of all those speeds which barely differ and what they do as opposed to having a High, Medium or Low option only.

The Kirby Diamond, two speed switch is a useful tool that I use very often. Kirby's will devour area rugs, welcome mats,
etc. The lower speed offers a gentler while still ample speed to clean more delicate items.

It is really nice to have this option and the ability to customize the power of the Kirby for the various cleaning tasks that we engage in.

The delicate mode on this Kirby had a similar function to the Suction Relief Vent on the rug nozzle on all Kirbys from the 516 to the Tradition.

The suction relief vent allowed you to regulate the suction for cleaning throw rugs and other delicate fabrics, and Kirby says to keep the headlight cap down whenever you decide to put the relief vent in the "delicate" position.

The Generation 3 also had a hose attachment with a suction control for the cleaning of delicate materials.
