Dyson! Never really desired one, but this one fell in my lap so to speak. It's a DC17 Absolute Animal. I just got it home from the shop, where it got a new belt and spiffing up. Have to get ready for work now, but will let you know what I think of it later.

Nebraska Furniture Mart had an absolutely amazing deal on them so I bought one. If they ever have such a deal again, I will be buying the Canister with turbine head. Thats the one I -really- want!


The only vacuum I have ever bought NIB.

It's an interesting experience trying your first Dyson out at home. The brushroll on these are very stiff try to keep it away from any delicate carpeting

It's ironic that you bought your DC17 at Nebraska Furniture Mart. NFM is owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, the parent company of Scott Fetzer, which of course, in turn, is the parent company of Kirby.

I used to work for a small appliance dealer/service center which used to be the only authorized Dyson service center in the area. While I was still working there the DC17 was the latest model, and by far the best cleaning model at the time. I havent used a Dyson that is never than the DC17, but I liked that unit the best compared to the rest of the model line up. The DC07 was a nice machine and it was quieter but the DC17 cleaned circles around the DC07 with its much more substantial brush roll. I wouldn't say it was a quiet machine, but the Dysons I have used are certainly not screamers like many of the other machines they competes with. One word of caution, be careful with the power switch. The earlier models seemed to have a problem with them buring out, however they were an easy fix. Best of luck with your new machine!

I have only owned a dc18 slim, have to say it is the easiest machine to live with daily!Just handy.

The Verdict

I do have to say, this is a cleaning machine. I have used a DC07 and a DC14 in the past, and this one does seem to outclean them for sure. I have a dog that sheds however, which I think is a bad thing with any bagless. When used in a home with no pet hair and little dirt, the problems that I experience with any bagless cleaner would be non-existent. I used the DC17 to vacuum my wall-to-wall plush carpet, and while it did a good job, when emptying the canister, some of the hair did not want to let go, sticking around the fins of the dirt cup. I ended up pulling the final bits of hair from the fins. I would view this as a high maintenance machine as I would want to wash the dirt container after each use, and would definitely want to wash my hands after emptying. I'll probably keep it just to have one in my collection, but would not be a favorite to use as a daily driver. I'll stick to bagged machines for my use. I have a newish Hoover WT bagged upright which cleans very well and doesn't seem to lose suction as the bag fills. I use the allergen filtration Y bags in it, and am very happy with it. Of course from time to time, I do pull out one of my vintage Hoover, Eurekas, Kirbys, etc. just for the nostalgia and vacuuming with a well made metal based vintage vacuum.
