An Aunt of mine had one of those in the early 1970s,,same color and all. I remember her's had a Hi/Lo toggle switch on the back, near the cord winder. Was an excellent vacuum and lasted many yrs. I think the hose finally gave out, and she was told by Sears there was no replacement, so she trashed it, and bought a new one. GRRR

I just tried it out, and wow, are the bearings in the canister dry! Does this have a motor with serviceable bearings?

What a difference
some oil makes! At least in the Powermate head! I was surprized how "user friendly" the motor was. Very accessable, no tricks. I oiled the bearings and the beater bar bearings. Big difference.
The brushstrips are worn down, but I notice that they are of the replacable type. Any ideas where I could get some?
Next I'll see if the main motor is as friendly to get to and service.

I remember seeing those models in our Sears, first nice big store in town, I think 66ish? They had one with a beach ball supported by the exhaust from the hose, clever trick. Oh the hours that machine had to have on it. Demo sale maybe?? Yikes.

I have a Kenmore almost exacty like yours. Mine is model 2197-1. I have an ad with it dated 1971. That slot in the side housed the crevice tool as Gary stated before. Kenmore crevice tools were different from other brands in that they flared out at the end like bell-bottom pants. They also had ridges along the flare to allow for air flow. Congrats on your find!!

The main motor is NOT a GE, if it is..and I think it is...it is cemented together and not servicable,but dont fear, any standard Lamb motor will replace it, the GEs are great, and usually last forever,,,but if a bearing goes bad there is no practical way of fixing it.

I managed the motor in my 1970s Kenmore Duopower canister apart and oiled, wasn't very had to do in the first place!
